Arizona Cardinals rookie receiver Anquan Boldin appeared at the Super Bowl media center on Thursday, January 29 for the announcement of the 2003 Pepsi Rookie of the Year.

Former NFL cornerback Deion Sanders emceed the press conference which included one-on-one interviews between Sanders and the five finalists – Nick Barnett, Anquan Boldin, Domanick Davis, Andre Johnson, and Terrell Suggs, comments by Commissioner Paul Tagliabue, and a brief highlight film of each of the players.

Sanders had a few tips for his fellow Florida State alumni. He shared Pro Bowl advice with Boldin, and gave him some props for his fashion sense.

Boldin’s record-breaking rookie season had already earned him national recognition. He was unanimously chosen as the Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year by 50 nationwide sportswriters and broadcasters. He was also chosen as The Sporting News Rookie of the Year and the Pro Football Weekly Offensive Rookie of the Year.

However, the Pepsi Rookie of the Year, voted on by fans on NFL.com, was awarded to Houston Texans running back Domanick Davis.

“He had a great year,” offered Boldin of Davis. “You can’t take anything away from him and he deserved the award. All of these guys did.”

Boldin, sporting a swollen eye suffered in a basketball game, wasn’t dismayed over the loss.

“Honestly, I am just real excited to be here and have fun,” Boldin said. “It I had won, it would have appreciated the honor, but I’ll take my trip to the Pro Bowl any day over any of the awards I’ve received.”

Boldin has been training for the Pro Bowl back in his hometown in Florida since the season came to a close. He will depart Houston on Monday for the Pro Bowl.

I’ve pretty much just been working out every day to stay in top shape for the Pro Bowl and so I’m sort of just looking forward to a few days out here and then next week in Hawaii.”

Boldin is hoping to run into his new head coach, Dennis Green, who is also in town for the Super Bowl festivities.

“I talked to him on the phone already and I’m real excited,” he shared. “He’s a great coach, just like Coach Mac was and we just talked about how he thought the season should go next year, and I just want to see us win. That seemed to be his plan so I’m excited about what the season will bring.”

Quarterback Josh McCown also attended the press conference to say hello to one of his favorite on-field targets. McCown had just returned from competing in the Southwest Pro Tow event where he joined twenty current and former NFL players in a race against Southwest employees to see which team could tow a plane the fastest.

“Of course, we won,” laughed McCown of the race. “It was pretty wild really. Nothing I ever thought I would be doing, but it was for charity.”

What a crock. That even happened a couple of times for rookie of the week. I feel sorry for Boldin. He has to pay for the way the Bidwells have ran this team for so long.

BILL BIDWELLS A F-IN LOSER!!

Nice - What a freaking scam. Q was clearly the best rook this year.

Davis had a decent campaign, but nothing compared to Anquan's season.

What a joke.

No more Pepsi for me.

Pepsi should be Punished.

I never like Pepsi anyway. My granfather used to be a Manager in a Coke Cola before he died. Very strict what we drink, it has to be Coke and not Pepsi. Loyal to his company. Pepsi sucks!!!

Internet voting of any kind is a crock.

I had a friends band on an online battle of the bands and I made a cookie-deleting script that let you vote ad nauseum. Imagine that, they won.

Houston would trade Davis in 1/2 second for Boldin.

It always happens when fans vote. Like someone said already it becomes a popularity contest. It wasn't the Bidwells.... It was the lack of airtime for the Cards to the national public. He recievd 3 ROY awards already. I am sure he is happy about what he got. Plus he is in the Pro bowl. The only Rookie. That has to account for something... I still think it is bogus though.

Coke should jump on this. Show Davis accepting the Pepsi award then show Boldin as they "Coca~Cola and Anquan Boldin. The REAL THING!"

From the Az papers:

Cardinals quarterback Josh McCown was tipped off about Davis' victory. He and Davis share the same management team, and when they broke the news to McCown, they were surprised by his reaction.

"I told them, 'What, you want me to be happy about that?' "McCown said. "My guy got (bleeped)."
