Surprised we don't have a thread on this show. It's really good. It's an animated series that is a bit anime-like that's based off of the game League of Legends (LoL). Don't let that last part scare you though. You don't have to have played LoL or know anything about it. I never played. The story and themes is between sisters, rich and poor, loyalty and betrayal, peace and war, and everything in between. Really well done.

Season 1 came out back in 2021 and the last 3 episodes of s2 dropped yesterday. I think I'm 6 episodes into s2 now and it's been as solid as S1 and with even better visuals in some episodes. I'm going to have to watch the last 2 episodes that I've seen again to fully take them in. I was honestly overloaded by the visuals last night since I was still drugged up from a surgery on Thursday. I might need a 3rd viewing Cheese style or after some shrooms with how crazy it felt last night. :)

Oh...Arcane got a new season??
Sweet
Yeah, it started on the 9th. They dropped 3 episodes each week. It's all out now.

I've watched through episode 7 now, 2 left, and I'm really liking it. The storytelling has been great and the animation has been amazing. They keep mixing up styles too that I'm really liking. It feels like they came up with an animation language for it where the style matches the type of scene it is. Trying to keep it vague for spoilers but you'll see what I mean when you watch it.

Is that a typo? Season 1 was in 2001, and they just came out with season 2 23 years later?

Season 2 episodes 1-6 were amazing. Episode 7 and 8 are so damn random with minor characters suddenly being important while the star of the series is just gone

Wow those last 3 episodes were absolute trash. Like last season of Lost trash except with fighting.

Good god how do you mess this series up so much?

What show are you watching?

Pacing in season 2 was off, but this seems a little over the top.

Still the best animation I've ever seen in a tv show.

Well I was watching what I consider to be the best anime show I have seen in my life. I didn't care for the ending.

Just curious, what makes you classify as "anime"? I guess I can see it, but I'm not sure I would consider it as straight anime (like Ninja Scroll or Samurai 7, for example). Regardless, it's absolutely beautiful.

I completely missed this show, and all the recent hubbub made me think it was just 1 season. Well, imagine my (delighted) surprise to discover there were two seasons.

The show is not without its problems, but it was fun.

This show isn't anime due to who made it and where it was made. If anyone wants an anime rabbit hole we can start giving out the great ones.

As for Arcane S2, I had some problems with how they handled some chars, like Vi was sidelined too much, but overall it was really good. The mix of music with the animation styles was amazing.

The actual definition of anime is hand drawn or computer generated animation from Japan. I stick with the traditional definition. You are making anime too broad of a term, especially comparing it to “cartoon”.

What would you characterize it as, then? Anime has morphed from it's actual definition to broader connotations. For me, it feels like anima. If it's not anima, though, and it's not a cartoon, then...? It's not just a regular show, clearly.

Devil did mention why it isn't really "anime", but Chris said he considers anything animated as "anime". I was trying to understand why--admittedly the conversation moved away from this show and moved more into general terms.

back in the eighties we called it Japanime... but since then a couple companies have stolen the term as their brand... but it was generally used to described animation done in traditional Japanese style...large eyes, weak pointy chin, spikey hair.... like this

I was under the impression everything animated was just grouped into "anime" when it became more mainstream. For example, back when The Hobbit came out...or Heavy Metal...they were not called Japanime nor anime...just animated movies...
and then there is Manga, which I thought was just the word for anime porn?? But apparently thats not correct.
can you clarify the differences?

It's just an animated show that's aimed at adults. Same as Venture Bros, Harvey Birdman, etc.

Anime means that an animated show from Japan.

Manga isn't porn, although it could be. It's the Japanese equivalent of a comic book. So usually you have a manga that goes along with an anime. It's like having the Avengers comic books along side the MCU.

Henta.i is what you were thinking of for anime porn. It's the name for Japanese anime and manga porn.

ahh, okay.
Never really been into animation with a few exceptions so the terminology often eludes me.

There is definitely a distinct difference between what is traditionally called anime and what is "regular" animation -- like Disney films.
