I don't really care either way for Jason Kidd. The season or two after he was traded to New Jersey I hated him and especially the way the Eastern media covered him and his family. The latest news out of New Jersey is that Jason Kidd is very upset with the Nets for trading Martin to Denver. Anybody else finding it difficult to really feel sorry for Kidd?
Obviously the general managers should bear the brunt of the criticism for failed signings, trades, etc., but it's been the moves that Kidd orchestrated in Phoenix and New Jersey that have led his teams to these situations. Yes, it was Jason Kidd who went to the Phoenix Suns and urged them to go hard after Penny Hardaway. Obviously they could have resisted. They should have. But it all want to hear Jason Kidd complain that they have trouble keeping and acquiring players when his recruits are abysmal disasters.
In New Jersey it's arguably been worse. First, he urged them to get rid of Keith Van Horn and it sounds like he wanted Mutombo. He is still on their salary cap this season for over $14 million. I forget what the settlement was, but I imagine they are probably still paying for him as well.
Even worse was the Alonzo Mourning catastrophe. His acquisition was a requirement for Jason Kidd to re-sign with New Jersey last summer. Well, that essentially means that New Jersey is paying Jason Kidd over $20 million next season because Mourning hardly played for the Nets. In fact in the last year of Alonzo Mourning's contract, 2006-07, the New Jersey Nets will be paying a combined $24 million for Kidd, who will be turning 34.
Of course I Jason Kidd isn't asking for a trade right now. That would be lunacy. He's the biggest reason they are in the salary situation that meant they could not re-sign Kenyon Martin. He is also a 31-year-old point guard who just had a major knee operation and is in just the second year of a huge, seven-year, super maximum contract. No team in its right mind would give the New Jersey Nets anything valuable for him. New York is the only team stupid enough to do that, and Isaiah Thomas already gave away every asset last year to get Marbury.
Jason Kidd, you've dug your own grave... now lie in it. BTW if you had half a brain you would have signed with San Antonio last year.
Lastly, and on another subject, is Isaiah Thomas the worst GM in the NBA? Why in the world would he want to give Jamaal Crawford a contract starting at somewhere in the $7-10 million range?
And that includes my Saturday morning rant.
