The one game that he played great in, is against Brady Quinn. That definitely factors into the decision.

Really against the ND defense. I think way too much is made of Russell's arm strength. It is hardly the most important attribute of a QB.

There was a uy interviewed one day on the radio and he was discussing QBs taken recently and how Quinn and Russell fit into this kind of model he was running by the interviewers and basically his premise was, most of the QBs who have done well in the NFl amassed a large number of college starts while the QBs that played below expectations normally had a much smaller number of starts on their college resumes.

This guy being interviewed, who is with the NFL Network, suggested he felt like Quinn was a much better choice than Russell for that reason.

It was an interesting interview.

I think Russell is a disaster waiting to happen who has found himself in the position of making millions based mostly on one game IMO. Beware the players moving fast up the boards and players who get the love for one great game.

Scouts, Inc in the ESPN draft mag had a similiar analysis -- lots of college starts had a much better "hit" percentage than the guys who had a season and a half in college.

That being said -- Russell was a starter for two full college seasons.

Why? What could Quinn have done to stop Russell?

Played a better game?

Seriously, I agree that it shouldn't matter per se, but when Russell had a great game when it mattered, and Quinn laid an egg, that will make teams wonder.

I agree, but it has nothing -- zero -- to do with who the opposing QB was.

Unless you are deciding between the two.

I get what you are saying.

It shouldn't be the end all, be all though and I think it would be the height of insanity to justify taking Russell ahead of Quinn based on one game alone (I know you are not saying that but it seems to be playing out like that a little).

Players have bad games...it happens. Quinn should not be penalized for that one game just as Russell should not be propped up based on that one game.

As much as I dislike ND, I take Quinn every day of the week over Russell and twice on Sundays.

I agree. One game should never be the end all. A lot of people said that Vince Young was drafted high because of his great game in the National Championship as well. That turned out pretty darn good for the Titans.

Food for thought.

And I am sure if I had the desire I could just as easily come up with an example going the other way...and VY has played one year. A bit early to hang the crown on his head no?

He had put in great seasons the previous 2 years. It was not all based on 1 game. He did come out early because his stock would never be higher, though. Even so, there were a lot of factors involved, not least of which was Bud Adams wanting to rub having the hometown favorite in Houston's collective face.

Kiper has never been wrong right? I just don't think that he would have cracked the first round. Scouts seem enamored with 40 times and his time would have been in the 4.5's. I could easily see him as a 2nd round, and no later than 3rd round pick.

Players never go up and down in the months before the draft either, right?
Dude, that's why I said this:

I don't know how good of a pro he would have been, or if he would have fallen in all the pre-draft workouts and so forth, but that's where he was considered when he turned to baseball.

I'm just saying where he was hyped to go when he turned to baseball. No more, no less.

From PFT (why on Earth do I go there, and then post? Answer: I'm bored)
POSTED 3:41 p.m. EDT; UPDATED 4:06 p.m. EDT, April 24, 2007
QUINN IN THE MIX FOR NO. 1 PICK
A league source tells us that the Raiders aren't talking only to quarterback JaMarcus Russell and receiver Calvin Johnson about a contract at the No. 1 slot in the draft.
Per the source, discussions are also being conducted with the representatives of quarterback Brady Quinn.
It's still unclear whether the Raiders are presently leaning toward any one of the three guys. One league insider believes that Quinn is in the mix solely for negotiating leverage. But the source also says that he wouldn't be shocked if the Raiders take Quinn instead of Russell.
"They're taking a quarterback," predicted the source.
We still think Johnson is the safest bet. But what the hell do we know?

Gambit, I don't think I've ever responded to one of your posts. That's just an ASFN accident. Too many good posts to respond to them all. Just wanted you to know I'm not ignoring your points.

Cubbie, Stout, and others, Jeff Samardzija would likely have been a second day pick because his 40 yd time would have likely been in the high 4.6s or low 4.7s range. He is not a burner and never ran away from anybody. The good teams handled him pretty well.

Remember, Weis and Tom Brady made a whole bunch of average receivers look good for New England. Weis coached WRs for two years under Belichick before he became the offensive coordinator.

If you watched the Sugar bowl, LSU doubled Samardzija and completely took him away. It got in his head and he didn't even turn for the perrfect lob that hit him in the head and should have been a score. With the pass catching TE, John Carlson, still injured, it was left to Rhema McKnight to be the main guy and he sucked.

Samardzija would have been a good slot possession receiver in the pros, I think.

Baseball is where he should be.

I thought that he could have dropped his 40 times into the high 4.5's. I still think that he would have been a 2nd/3rd rounder as a TE, vs. WR. You move him to TE, and suddenly, he isn't as slow anymore.

Skkorp,

I think you have responded to me in the past. It's cool, I really enjoy the forum you put together here, and the myriad quality posters. I have belonged to other message boards that are nowhere near as informative and entertaining and want you to know your efforts are appreciated.

Oftentimes my posts are what could be delicately referred to as "thread killers." It is a gift I have in live conversation as well.

I look forward to the Draft and the second-guessing that will go along with it. My only hope is I don't get myself banned. ;)

I agree he might have been a decent pass catching TE.

Quite possible, because he wasn't anywhere near workouts when he went with baseball.
