Deion Sanders finally received the compensation he deserved for his total revamp of Colorado football. On Friday, the University of Colorado and Sanders announced a five-year contract extension worth $54 million.
The contract will kick in this season, making Coach Prime the highest-paid head coach in the Big 12 and the sixth highest-paid head coach in college football.
Buffs fans celebrated the extension, which sometimes felt like it might never happen and Sanders would move on to the NFL. CU fans can rejoice and look forward to the next five years of Deion Sanders at the helm of Colorado football.
With such a massive contract, the Buffaloes' expectations are rightfully higher. But it is worth noting everything Sanders' contract entails.
Here is everything you need to know about Deion Sanders' new contract with Colorado.
Sanders' contract is a five-year deal lasting through the 2029 season.
Sanders' new salary increases each year as follows:
Sanders' contract has buyout amounts decreasing each year.
If any school or NFL team wants to poach Sanders away from Colorado, they would need to pay the amount above, depending on the year. Any time in the next two years would be quite the price to hire Coach Prime.
If Colorado repeats as nine-game winners like it did a year ago, Sanders will earn an extra $150,000. A conference championship would net Sanders $400,000 and an additional $50,000 for a College Football Playoff first-round victory. The biggest bonus is $250,000 if Colorado wins a national championship.
