Expectations don't rattle steady Webb

Brenly on Webb:

"Despite his southern accent, (Webb's) a pretty sharp guy, and he picks things up rather quickly."

I'm not big on political correctness, but this struck me as a little inapproriate.

That's a common stereotype.

Southern=stupid

As someone who was born and bred in the south, I've seen this stereotype quite a bit.

My dad has a good high paying job, and is considered the best at what he does (sales management in the high tech industry), yet he is passed over when it comes to speaking in front of his peers.

My guess is the comment was made in jest. He could have been laughing when he said it, and the reporter wouldn't put it. I haven't found the article that says the players are mad at Brenly for it.

I dont think this was a slip. I have seen all the DBacks even Webb laughing at how everyone makes fun of his accent. This is why Brenley was brought in. To keep the clubhouse loose. Schowlwater was like a dictator in there.

I agree. I doubt it is something that Webb is sensitive about.

It was reported under Milwaukee Brewers tidbits, if I remember right, so apparently it was their players who reacted.

That would have been good to know in the original post. I really don't care what Brewers players think. As long as the Dbacks players don't mind, and from what it sounds like they don't, then I'm cool with it.

It was under the Texas Rangers notes section this Tuesday. Jay Powell was quoted.

Thanks. Sometimes I have the memory of a 112 year old amnesiac, when it comes to details I've skimmed. :)

Unless brenly was just joking around, i would take that as an insult. I actually didnt know that brandon had a southern accent. why does it even matter?

You can BET that this is another case of something being taken totally outta context--something that doesn't sound funny when in print (just like email and message boards)... but 99.99% sure that the good ol' boy Southern accent that Brandon uses is target for D'backs "in-jokes" ... and BB was feeding off of this without considering the black and white ramifications of how this could appear to uptight people if printed in a newspaper "objectively"
