Errnt...I've come to the conclusion that the coaches of the Colangeli teams are just yes men who end up the fall guys from the mistakes that the Colangeli make so often. Even the Mercury play a run and gun game and their centers are used less and less and the PF's are now the new height we see at the center position. Poor Amare...he will play more center than PF as the years go by and he will become more and more frustrated and injuries will soon occur....same typical scenario year after year.

Not so fast about the Mercury. The Russian babe (hey I love really, really tall blondes) is supposed to be returning after the Olympics. She was beginning to show real promise before she got pregnant and returned to Russia.

Well that Russian Babe...Maria Stepanova..will first need to get a visa, probably get one for her baby and husband if they got married.....then get with the flow of the team. They will hesitate using her too much since she has not played with the girls for almost 3 years......they used her pretty sparingly 3 years ago when they should have had her playing 30 minutes a game.

At the time of the trade, Majerle seemed like damaged goods with his back problems. He was still having numbness in one of his legs and couldn't jump like he used to (not that he had any hops to give). He was suddenly stationary and something of a liability on defense.

Holy cow. I thought I was the only Suns fan in the world who understood the wisdom of the Majerle/Williams trade.

Gaddabout, where have you been all my life! :notworthy
Apparently at the wrong bars spending way too much explaining my point of view.

It's entirely possible that the Phoenix Suns could have signed Divac to a two-year deal starting at around $5.5 million. I would have preferred that to Richardson. Now if they can somehow swing Dampier for the same money (I seriously doubt this is a possibility) I'll be happy.

do you people ever get tired of bitching?

the suns felt that they had a good chance of getting a player that they felt was worth the risk of having the last of their cap money tied up. even right now it isnt a surething that the clippers will match. the suns management knows what it is doing a great deal better then you or me. so why dont you give them a brake and stop bitching.

Amen scotsman13,

I don't understand how some of you people would rather sign a far less talented player and overpay then potentially get a guy like Q. I really, really like what the suns did with Q. They didnt overpay and got a tremendous talent. I support the move 100% and am glad we are going for "the best player available" instead of settling for less. What were your ideas???? And don't say Dampier because he was very unrealistic at the time.

I would take that a step farther. The Coaches (Managers) and GM's of Jerry's teams are just "yes" men.

Bryan brought no experience or expertise to the Suns GM title. He was obviously brought in to take Jerry's decisions and run with them, as Jerry promoted himself from GM. The most captive "yes" man of all -- Jerry's son.

Joe Garagiola, Jr., was a Players' Agent who also brought no experience or expertise to the D'backs GM title. He, too, was brought in to take Jerry's decisions and run with them, as Jerry grabbed more glamourous titles than GM. Another captive "yes" man -- Joe, Sr.'s, son.

Jerry has made every major decision involving the Suns and D'backs, and has no shame about upstaging his General Managers during Press conferences or when deals are about to be made.

The one person who's had a little latitude during Jerry's 37 years was Cotton Fitzsimmons, and he's gone now.

Jerry is staying in control for three more years with the Suns and seven more with the D'backs. It's not going to change quickly.

The move for Q was not bad in itself but unless he's a great defender we've done little to shore up our defense this summer and that was sorely needed. Heck, the move might work out yet if the Clips match and we get Damps at a bargain price - he being pretty solid on D exactly where it's needed most. I'd have rather we made a try for Etan Thomas, which if the Wiz matched him would leave us in the same boat regarding Dampier.

That's taking a narrow view - basically, I disagree with BC apparent plan for the team, which seems to be to say 'screw defense, we're going to go the Dallas route and just try to outscore our opponents. In fact we'll go softer in the middle than the Mavs.' I think that's a guarantteed recipe for playoff failure. Not surprisingly, I disagree with almost every move he's made this summer, starting with the retention of D'Antoni - who's proved he doesn't know squat about defense. Nash? Nah, more liabilities on defense. Opt out of the draft? Not if there are any defensive stalwarts waiting to be nabbed, either 'big' or a PG. Oh wait, Vroman sounds like he could be useful so I don't disagree with everything...

If the Suns get Q and having already added Nash they have become considerably more athletic. Athleticism goes a long way towards having a good defense. Just look at Detroit.

Throughout all the Cotton articles lately, something was very clear. Cotton is the person who pursuaded BC to come back to the Suns and away from his realestate deals.

The entire time before he was named GM he was under Cotton's wing. They shared an office, and Bryan tried to soak up as much as possible from him.

So in other words, Bryan is Cotton's protege, not Jerry's......

Agreed. I dare anyone to say they knew Dampier would still be available today, possibly pondering a MLE deal -- which is what's made him suddenly attractive.

Hats off to you.

Thanks, but it was strongly motivated by wishful thinking. For some reason I just really believe in Dampier, even though I know he has been historically inconsistent. (Edit: must be a first-name thing, heh.)

Did you take minercon's comment as something "good" about the C's, grahamcrackr?

My comment put the responsibility, not on the Colangeli, but on Jerry himself.

Why didn't you respond to the merit of the thought?

merit of your thought? you blame the 4 time nba executive of the year and the only executive/owner in the hall of fame for what?

making the 5th most successful team since it has come into the nba? for keeping the team in pheonix in 87 when the owners were willing to move it out of the state? for giving millions of dollars to charites in pheonix? for making sure that the suns werent sold to someone who would move them to new jersey? for having more basketball knowledge then you can ever hope of having? for just having a team here that we can all be a fan of?

the simple fact is that your thoguhts have no merit and as such do not even deserve this little acknowledgement.

Q

I started this thread and I still am steadfast in my negativity in Brian C. decision to go down this path.

What I fear is what I have seen in 20 years of watching the Suns. They place little importance on the defensive end of the game. They have always
been more interested in fielding a team of scorers as opposed to scorers & defenders. I admit I have seen Q play only a couple of times and from those games and the different sites I surf about his playing style, defense is NOT his forte. Given that, he again fits the Suns mold of a very good offense player with limited desire to play any defense.

I read a quote from Brian on one of the basketball sites I go to (hoops hype or
inside hoops) that he did admit the risk in waiting 15 days while other players are taken off the board. I am not saying that the Suns should grossly overpay for a so so player but I am saying I would overpay for someone we could put in the middle that can at the very least block shots, get some rebounds and manhandle some people.

how do you know this wont still happen? once the suns get Q or the money it may free them up for a trade of some type or bring in some player for a vet min. there are a couple of old sayings that all lead to the same end. that is "dont count your eggs till they are hatched."

this all comes down to do you believe that JC and the suns want to be successful? i do. i also know that they will make millions of dollars more if they do win. so while there maybe a differant outlook on how to get to that end, never fear that JC and the suns are working to make this a winning team.

Close. Except "thoughts" should be singular. On this board, he has only posted one thought. Over and over and over and over and over and over ............

We all know you hate Jerry. There's your ackowledgement.

Now PLEASE, post something different. Or, you could just post a blank screen. We would see the name BC867, and fill it in ourselves with something scathing about Jerry and Brian, hatred of small ball, balanced offense, etc.... It would be easy, because we wouldn't have fill it in with anything constructive or positive, or containing any ideas regarding specific players, coaches or managers, other teams, the NBA in general, the salary cap, the draft, the media, or ANYTHING fan related. We'd just see BC867 ... hates Jerry. Then we would move on.

Actually, I already have that option, come to think of it. It's called the ignore button.

Exactly Scot! The Suns didn't "miss" any signing because of having to wait the 15 days. In fact, it probably made BC NOT make a major blunder by signing Divac or Ostertagg for way, way too much money and too long. And, don't hit me with this "they could have PROBABLY signed them for this or that amount of money" because NONE of you know anything about that for sure. There are too many on this board who think they are cap gurus and throw out figures like they are actually accurate. Sorry, didn't mean to rant....

At any rate, it makes more sense to sign a quality player like Richardson and wait than make a stretch on aging, over the hill centers (Divac and Ostertaag) or potential (Okur). At least in my opinion. Good job with this situation, also in my opinion.

Brian Colangelo has made some mistakes, no doubt about it. But I will submit that Jerry West made some blunders too along the way. It has nothing to do with heredity or last name, it has to do with learning and growing in the job. Was BC too young and not experienced enough when he got the job? No doubt. But don't you think JC knew that he had Cotton there to help his boy? What father wouldn't set his son up with a chance to succeed like that if they had the opportunity? Sure it's a business but Jerry is a father and a man like me and I know I try to give my kids opportunity if I can.

Judging from most of the posts I read on this board I think BC has done a better job than those posters in building an NBA team. Some of the inane trades/signing scenarios put forth here are good for a belly laugh once in a while and not much else. But, I guess that's what this forum is for eh? I am taking advantage of spewing my nonsense too :)

I have been a Suns fan since Day 1. I go back to the very first season and am still here looking forward to the upcoming season. I have seen firsthand every success and every failure in the history of this team. I think the success has far, far exceeded the failure. I have had many, many more enjoyable seasons than not. I love the Suns and the NBA, even in the sorry state it is in today. I would love to have a time machine to go back and relive the 1976 finals and the triple overtime game in Boston (to me the BEST basketball game I've ever seen), to see Dick Van Arsdale, Paul Westphal, Connie Hawkins, Charles Barkley, Kevin Johnson, Larry Nance, Charlie Scott, Alvin Adams, Dan Majerle, Curtis Perry, Gar Heard, et al play again! God I would love that! But, I have to be satisfied with those memories and looking forward to future ones being made.

Sorry for the rambling response and off topic response for the most part. I have taken shots at the Colangelos, Brian in particular, in the past. But, on the Q signing, I think he did the right thing and if he comes here it will be great.
