First, I wanted to say that Keim really liked Brian Hoyer, placed a third-round tender on him and had to cut him for financial reasons more than because of his level of play.

OK, lets talk facts about the football decisions that we do know.

  1. Keim Wanted AP over Levi How do we know this? Because of a blind quote to The Sporting News? Who do you think placed the quote?
  2. When Whiz got his new contract, he had final say on all football related decisions We don't "Know" this, either. I believe it to be true when it comes to the Final 53, but I don't think it was "all football-related decisions. Please justify.
  3. One of the final straws for Bidwill was Whiz's evaluation on R. Wilson, not Keim's. I believe that M. Bidwill is/was obsessed with Russell Wilson, don't know where the cleave in who's opinion is.
  4. The talent obtained from the draft went downhill when Whiz had control. Also when Keim was promoted to VP Player Personnel, but who's splitting hairs?
  5. We have no clue were Keim had players ranked, but Whiz is no longer here and Keim is. What does this prove, exactly?
  6. Whiz hand picked all QB's. I believe this, but CBus has pointed out pretty persuasively that he was hand-picking them from the remainders pile of an adult bookstore; hard to find quality articles there.
  7. Hoyer threw three INT's yesterday with a great LT and TE playing for him.
  8. We DO NOT know if Houlser or Williams were picks from Keim or Whiz, but we do know that Whiz had final say. I don't believe this to be the case. What I do know is that the personnel men have increasing control over prospects the further we get into the draft, and Keim has praised Houseler and Williams to the high heavens after Whis was escorted from the building. As I've said multiple times, Keim doesn't deserve SOLE blame for these two terrible picks, but he deserves SOME blame for them.
  9. All except one 2013 draft pick is on the roster and the one was a 6th round risk that did not make it due to health, not skill. And only one of them are starting for a team that finished the season 1-11 last year. Meanwhile, where are Jasper Brinkley, Alexander, Jerroud Powers, and Rashard Johnson? Have they shown up on any Sunday, because they were our top free agent targets this year.

Did I miss anything? So, based on the facts, to pin so much on Keim is a biased exaggeration since we do not know enough and anyone claiming to know more is fooling themselves. The funny part is, you were so quick to make an exaggeration for the positive in the case of the Steelers, but I cannot remember that last time you made a positive comment about the Cardinals. That really says a lot to me.

If you call your own suspicions and prejudices "facts," your case looks a little better. If you strip those out, and only rely on the things that are actually in evidence, you see that Keim might best be described as an ordinary talent evaluator based on the evidence at hand, with room certainly to improve.

My argument isn't that Keim doesn't deserve a shot in the Big Boy Chair. I'm merely saying that his reputation on this board as being an inerrant evaluator of talent is pretty off-base.

I am amazed that people can hate keim so much after 10 years or whatever of the human snail. This offseason we did things like a real football team and it was exciting to see.

But you know, slam everything and hate it all. I mean, thats the point of being a fan.

Thank you for your cogent and well-researched and -analyzed position. You've really clarified our areas of disagreement for me. While it's clear that we're far apart on our understandings of the facts on the ground, we can now agree to disagree, understand that we both are making fair, reasonable points, and depart as gentlemen.

I am amazed that people can hate keim so much after 10 years or whatever of the human snail. This offseason we did things like a real football team and it was exciting to see.

I guess, but it seems like financially motivated activity at best, or activity for activity's sake at worst. Can we say right now that we're a better football team for all the changes that we made? Well, we're 1-2, and just got blown out and the offense didn't look much better than what we were seeing with Brian Hoyer under center. So I'm going to say no.

And then again, I'm not slamming everything and hating it all. I'm much more entertained by this version of the Arizona Cardinals than the last one that I remember. I've moved from despair to disappointment.

And I would argue that a fan should've be thrilled and tickled that we're hoping for a 8-8 season right now. A fan should expect to win every game, and be disappointed and mad when we lose. That's my biggest beef with Catfish--if everyone working exceptionally hard and doing their absolute best and maximizing everyone's talent yields a .500 season, then the team needs to be replaced.

That's not good enough for this particular fan.

I was excited to see people actually sign and moves actually be made. It was far better and far more promising than the typical lets wait until everyone else is done and pick up the scraps mentality. After the last few seasons of massive losing streaks, to expect more than 8-8 out of the gate is delusional. These guys inherited a dumpster fire and while it may have been put out there is still clean up to do. We still having glaring holes and weaknesses.

Its just old. Every thread I open is a non stop keim bash or people already hating arians when he hasnt even had time to do much.

Be more realistic. Rome wasnt built in a day.

I am willing to give these guys time and hope for the best. I have no use in being negative and bitching about everything, its only football.

and no, you arent bitching about everything but I would say 7-10 posts are complaining about Keim. Suck it up man, hes gonna be our GM for ATL LEAST 3 years. give him some time to prove you wrong. If in 3 years he has destroyed our team I will break out my pitchfork and join you, promice.

I want us to go 16-0

but when we dont, I will still enjoy Monday. its a game.

Give me a break. This happens every offseason. No, we don't usually sign guys like Eric Winston and John Abraham at the eve of training camp, but can we look at their results so far and say that those were amazing signings? I don't particularly think so.

Remember all that activity TWO OFFSEASONS AGO, when we signed a whole bunch of guys and traded for Kolb? How did that work out?

Just because moves are made doesn't mean that most of the moves are good ones, or even any of them are. I mean, Lorenzo Alexander was one of our top targets in free agency. Now he's on IR, and he'll end 2013 with zero sacks and possibly zero QB pressures. Great job.

And saying that Rome Wasn't Built in a Day flies in the face of what the front office has been telling us all offseason. The 2012 Colts went from--what?--2-14 to 12-4? What is the flip that the Saints are going to make this offseason? Is the change that we made at QB equivalent to what Indy went through?

The offense was a dumpster fire last year, but many of the pieces there were changed. The defense was among the elite in the NFL, and was systematically dismantled to get stronger against the run in a passing league, and still can't stop the run when it matters. So, good work there?

when did it matter? when we punted 8 straight times and were down by 3 tds?

id never seen us be so proactive, we must be watching different teams

either way, I dont care to argue it. Keep spending all day complaining about keim, its cool. Once it turns into pure complaining I stop reading anyway.

How about the 4th quarter with the score tied and 1:45 left on the clock?

What does "proactive" mean? An obvious trade (for Palmer) that was well-done and got the kudos it deserved, and then not addressing the flaws in the team (rush linebacker, left tackle) except for mid-round picks? No tight ends brought in save a 7th round pick who's buried on the depth chart?

Proactively done.

kerouac9;2888080The offense was a dumpster fire last year said:
K-9-----to be fair, this defense was doing pretty well stopping the run when Dumpster Dan was in the line-up------and stopping the run yesterday didn't really matter, because until Brees had the game sowed up, they didn't need to run. The only did so late in order to kill clock.

You may hate what Keim has done here, but this is his first year as GM. He has made many more good moves as GM than bad ones. Whether or not you wish to acknowledge that Whiz had final say on picks is your choice, but nearly all public information says otherwise.

So far as dismantling the defense, Keim only dismantled our Safety position, and neither Rhodes nor Wilson is making any difference anywhere this year, and Wilson made very little, (if any last year).

Keim brought in the only available edge rusher available THIS year in Abraham. While our OLB's are not fast enough to be edge rushers, they ARE strong enough to set the edge, (and hold it). Thus they help stop the run.

He made our CB position about as strong as one could do THIS year in an effort to help against the pass, and he drafted play makers in the secondary when he was not filling greater needs. He did replace Wilson with Bell, and the result was virtually indistinguishable. Both are too slow to stop the pass. Rhodes, on the other hand is totally out of football, (no one else would hire him).

Your disgust with Keim is at least as flawed as my enthusiasm was for all the good done so far by BASK. Until 2011 he was merely a scout. In 2011 he was made head scout. Michael saw that he still did not have enough power to contend with Graves and Whiz, so in 2012 he upped the ante to Head Scout and VP in charge of player personnel. He (still) had a hard time overcoming Whiz and Graves, (hence the complete change out by Michael).

Meanwhile, Keim did procure Palmer, Winston, and Abraham, and did it for far less than one might have expected. Everyone else in the league had that opportunity, but Keim made it happen here. That should be acknowledged. He also manufactured extra picks in the draft, something NEVER done by Graves, who was famous for giving picks away.

Tell you what, I will soften my stance on enthusiasm and exhuberance, if you are willing to meet me a little bit and give at least some credit to Keim for doing about the most that a GM could do in this one off season to make us better.

This was one terrible game, against a very good opponent on their turf. If we were to tank a game, THIS would be the one to tank. This, (at least at this point) does not define our season. Let us see what happens from here on out before we both continue with our charade's.

Keim brought in the only available edge rusher available THIS year in Abraham.

I don't believe this to be true. Elvis Dumervill was available and is one of the top pass rushers in the game. Dwight Freeney (who you called still a defensive force in a thread defending Levi Brown getting abused) was available. Paul Kruger who was a DE/SAM/OLB for the Ravens who had 9 sacks last year was also available.

and this says nothing of the draft. But there were other edge rushers available.

While our OLB's are not fast enough to be edge rushers, they ARE strong enough to set the edge, (and hold it). Thus they help stop the run.

do we really believe that our CB are better then they were last year? Toler's been solid for Indy. Haven't seen much of Gay. Meanwhile, our CBs outside of Peterson are really bad. Looks to me like we went quantity over quality there. Bell has been really bad, but Wilson wasn't great last year. And as far as Rhodes, well, I've stated my opinion several times on why he's not on this team...or the league. But regardless of the NFL black-balling him, if the team didn't want him on it, they damn sure should have tried to replace him with someone better then Johnson, who's always been a non-factor.

I think the Cardinals new front office filled as many of the holes as they could. Lets not forget they started off behind the 8 Ball. They initially had zero cap room to work with. They were trying to install a new system and inherited a team with players who were originally brought in for a completely different system. I personally think the Cardinals new front office did an amazing job with what they had to work with.

So to say "Why didn't they address LT and pass rusher?" seems a bit unfair. You are talking about two of the most difficult and expensive positions in the league to fill. We are still living with the sins of the past GM "who's name shall not be spoken".

As I've said multiple times elsewhere, what does stopping the run matter when you're hemmorgaing yards and big plays through the air. It's a passing league, and we can't pressure the passer or stop him from completing passes.

We've gone from 1st in opponent QB rating in 2012 to 25th this year. So... at least we're stopping the run? I guess?

You may hate what Keim has done here, but this is his first year as GM. He has made many more good moves as GM than bad ones. Whether or not you wish to acknowledge that Whiz had final say on picks is your choice, but nearly all public information says otherwise.

I don't hate what Keim has done here. I just don't think that he's deserving of the effusive praise you're laying at his doorstep (most vocally of all the posters including Mitch). We're 1-2 after three games, including a blowout to the Saints and a close loss to the 1-2 Rams. We're not exactly building an immediate contender right now, and that was the express desire of the front office when they got hired last February.

I'm happy to see "nearly all the public information" that you have illustrating that Whis had final say on draft choices. Because no one has produced it.

So far as dismantling the defense, Keim only dismantled our Safety position, and neither Rhodes nor Wilson is making any difference anywhere this year, and Wilson made very little, (if any last year).

So I must have imagined the two new cornerbacks and three linebackers who weren't playing for the 2012 Arizona Cardinals. Two safeties, 2 corners, and 3 LBs is seven of twelve defensive starters (counting nickel DB as a starter). Sounds like an overhaul to me.

Ugh. If you're going to try and bust some knowledge, at least check your facts before you do.

Keim was Director of College Scouting (head scout) from 2006-2008.
In 2008, he was promoted to Director of Player Personnel (the guy who is the point man for all draft-related evaluations and recommendations), where he served until 2012, when he was promoted to VP Player Personnel, where he essentially became on the same level as Graves and Whis in regard to personnel decisions.

Facts.

He made it happen because no one wanted Palmer, Winston, or Abraham. Winston and Abraham have pretty much illustrated why no one wanted them, and Palmer has shown himself to be the league-average quarterback who falls apart under pressure that was the scouting report on him.

Other than the Browns (who had a less-expensive version in Brandon Weeden) and the Jags, who would have wanted Carson Palmer?

What picks did Graves "give away" after the Pace/Johnson draft (which rumors are was asked for by Dave McGinnis)?

Tell you what, I will soften my stance on enthusiasm and exhuberance, if you are willing to meet me a little bit and give at least some credit to Keim for doing about the most that a GM could do in this one off season to make us better.

I don't think that Keim did the most that any GM could have done. That's what Miami's GM and Indy's owner did this offseason. Keim made a bunch of moves. Some of them haven't panned out, some of them might still, drafting Mathieu seems like a great way of maximizing a potential draft pick.

It's just too early to sing Hosannas to Steven Keim and Bruce Arians when this could very well be a 5-11 football team.

And how are the St. Louis Rams a "Very good opponent"? This season (LIMITED SAMPLE SIZE) they're 23rd in offense, 26th in defense, and have a point differential of -28. The Saints are a very good opponent, and they dismantled us after the first drive.

Toler's been solid for Indy.

Uh the two Colts games I watched Toler has given up some big plays. Allowed a TD for the Raiders to go ahead in the 4th quarter. Got taken out of the play against the Dolphins for an early TD. Got beat by Mike Wallace again for a long pass to the 1 yard line that set up the go ahead winning TD for Miami.

Yes Toler has a INT but it was a gift of an INT. Terrible throw by Pryor! I mean god awful throw!

Didn't watch the Niner game so I'm not sure how he performed there.

Well, it's a good thing that we elevated Draft Guru Steve Keim to the General Manager's position. Certainly his position didn't give him any responsibility over those draft decisions.

We need to face it... On the surface, Michael looks to be more interested in a winning team than his father was, but the reality is: Save for the second coming of The Kurt Warner, this team has always been a second rate operation.

So far Arians is the coaching version of Dockett.. Talks a good game, seems incapable of consistently backing it up.
At least he has his "elite" LT.

Because we are one and two? because we dont have the personell to cover tight ends? he has done everything he said, we just didnt win.

I hope this doesn't get me banned, but I still marvel at the blind faith Keim gets on this board from pretty informed Cardinal fans. If he has any track record at all it is as the #2 behind Graves assisting in the composition of some very poor draft classes and the absolute neglect of the 3 most important positions on a football team QB, LT & pass rusher. Was he the trigger man? No, if he was he never would have gotten the position of GM. But, to believe the second highest ranking position in the team's front office did not have a significant say in personnel matters is kind of silly.

As for this past offseason, I guess I am less impressed with the number of moves made and more depressed in the overall production. Palmer, Powers, and Dansby are the only three significantly positive moves made in free agency. The rest have not been impressive in the least from what I have seen. The fact that the team made a point of emphasis to get bigger and slower on defense highlights the failed logic behind the defense and bringing it together. In a league that is driven by passing and creating matchup advantages on offense, how can you justify making stopping the run a priority and bringing in personnel that other teams can exploit in the passing game?

Keim is getting his shot and I hope he runs with it, but I still fail to see how he has significantly improved the talent on this roster or why he should be given the benefit of the doubt for anything.

For some reason I just think that Michael Bidwill has the final say on who the Cardinals bring in. Nothing to base that on other than after Green was fired he and Graves came out and claimed they were responsible for the drafts while Denny was coach.

I don't know though. I may be dizzy from too many 5-11 seasons.

I still Marvel at the blind non-faith Keim gets on this board from pretty informed cardinals fans.

He is a good guy, he bleeds red, he is competitive, has desire, has a plan.

This all in transition from the human snail that I was sick of 5 years ago.

I prefer to remain optimistic vs pessimistic.
