QUAID SUES FOR 'BROKEBUCKS'
By TERRY SCHERMERHORN

March 24, 2006 -- LOS ANGELES -

"Brokeback Mountain" co-star Randy Quaid claims he was low-balled by producers of the gay-cowboy flick - so he's suing for $10 million.

The actor "donated" his time after moviemakers allegedly told him he was making "a low-budget, art-house film with no prospect of making any money," according to the lawsuit filed yesterday.

The film has grossed more than $80 million in the United States alone.

You know, normally I'd be against this, but I see the point. Some famous individuals want to do nice things for free to smaller entities, in order to help them out. If those entities lie and say they're not going to go mega with it, then I'd have a beef too. Maybe not a ten million dollar beef, but still.

I wonder what the implications are with the union. SAG is usually pretty strict in the way that pay is structured. If Quaid was paid SAG wages but had no stipulation in his contract that he would share in any profits, then he has very little room to complain. If, however, he deferred payments, or wasn't paid at all, then the union will most likely side with him, and this could be a mess.

Wow, that could potentially be a huge issue. I look forward to hearing more about this...hope it doesn't get buried quickly.

Who cares - Heath and Jake are HOT!

Hells Yeah!

I actually just saw this movie over the weekend. I really enjoyed it, more than I thought I would. Thought Heath Ledger did an awesome job. I couldn't for the life of me understand the last line he said in the movie though.

Randy Quaid needs to settle down a little bit.

I wish I could figure out what was up with Health Ledgers "accent". It really bothered me, but I haven't actually been around slack jawed cowboys at any point in my life so maybe it was authentic

Randy Quaid Drops Suit Over 'Brokeback' Profits
Actor Claimed He Was Fleeced Into Working For Cheap

LOS ANGELES -- "Brokeback Mountain" co-star Randy Quaid has dropped a lawsuit over his compensation for the Academy Award-winning film.

Quaid had sued Focus Features and producers David Linde and James Schamus in March, claiming he was fleeced into working cheaply by the filmmakers' assertion that "Brokeback Mountain" was "a low-budget, art-house film, with no prospect of making any money."

"Brokeback Mountain," whose three Oscars included best director for Ang Lee, topped $82 million at the domestic box office.

Quaid had been seeking at least $10 million. His publicist, Susan Madore, said Thursday that Quaid decided to drop the lawsuit after his lawyers told him Focus agreed to pay him a bonus, which he wants split between him and other principal cast members.

Focus Features denied making any settlement with Quaid.

"The circumstances of him dropping the suit are as mysterious as the circumstances under which he filed his claim," Focus spokeswoman Adriene Bowles said. "Focus Features never negotiated, offered or agreed to any settlement agreement with Mr. Quaid or his attorneys, but we are happy to put this behind us, and do wish (him) all the best."

"Brokeback Mountain" features Quaid as a hard-nosed sheep rancher who hires Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal's characters, two young cowboys who share a summer of love while tending the flock then carry on a gay love affair for decades.

Saw this last night.

Honestly, the first kissing scene made me really uncomfortable (i started to giggle nervously). Not so much in that it was two guys kissing, but more so that I kept thinking it was Jake Gyllenhal and Heath Ledger kissing.

As I got more into the characters though, that went away.

I really liked this movie. Tragic love story.

edit: I forgot to add that the acting was superb. Jake and Heath did a great job. I also liked Michelle Williams and Anne Hathway in their roles. Heck, even the nurse chick from ER (can't remember her name).

I just watched it. This is exactly what I thought too. The acting was exceptional, by everyone. I thought the scenery was awesome too. I didn’t realize it was such a sad story.
