Ah, see we've got this whole contract thing wrong. Let's look at it biologically. We've got a collection of 20 something males who clearly have the hormone to spare.

This is how we get them to sign contracts:

We have the terms and conditions of the players participation nicely written on the chest of an incredible attractive young woman (if there are a lot of incentive clauses or whatnot, make it two women) and have her go up to said player at which time she says (sultry voice) "Could you sign my chest, you big strong man? Right near the X?".

And of course, being a manly man he'd agree quickly.

Then Rod Graves jumps out a conversion van (hidden nearby) and screams "YOU'RE SIGNED, REPORT TO CAMP NOW expletive deleted".

Then Ashton Kutcher can run up, slap him on the backside and roll around on the ground laughing.

See? No more holdouts. And think about how much fun getting faxes and photocopies of player contracts would be.

I guess neither of you gentlemen noticed the fact that the Cards way overpaid this guy. He should have gotten $18 million guaranteed and the article says he got over $18.5 million. If the Cards would have said they weren't going to raise the anti, he'd still be holding out. So they overpaid, just like some on this board wanted them to do and they are still the bad guys.

Go figure.

They didnt overpay Gauranteed money wise. His Gauranteed isnt over 18.5 Mill it is just barely over 18 Mill. 18.05 Mill would be exactly slotted between pick #4 and pick #6. But Brown got 18.1 Mill.

But they could end up ponying up if he reaches some incentives.

Here is how negotiations went down and why they signed a deal finally IMO.

Graves stood pat with his pure slot system idea no matter how many years were invloved. It was 18.1 Mill no matter if it was 5 years or 6 years. Segal wanted more depending on how many years total the deal was. Segal gave into the 18.1 Mill over 6 years idea but for Segal to sign off on it the Cards had to add more incentives, escalators, and more of a reassurance that the Cards will be forced to renegotiate before the 6 year got here. So the Cards added more escalators, added more incentives, and bumped the last year base salary from probably the ideal 10-12 Mill(projected franchise tag amount for that year for OL) to probably something close to 20 Mill.

So Graves can technically tell everyone the deal from a week ago is very close to the same as it is today based off of the main ideas of the deal, 6 years 18.1 Mill gauranteed. But Segal is also technically correct in saying that he negotiatied a better deal then a week ago becuase he got more incentives, escalators, and more of a reassurance that the Cards will be forced to renegotiate before the 6 year got here.

What we need to see now is how hard or how easy are the incentives and/or escalators are to get. Since the deal is so called worth 62 Mill. I am going to say those incentives are pretty hard to get just like the Fitz deal incentives and escalators were. Probably something like he has to make the pro bowl 2 out of his first 3 years(which was in Fitz Deal by the way). Also want to know how the Gauranteed is spread how. How much is signing bonus and how much is roster bonus and in what years are they due.

Well, Levi has missed 7 practices and there’s no way to get that back, so some say.

I can easily imagine that 5 years down the road, should Levi appear in a couple of Pro Bowls… K9 in his 100,000th. pontificating on this board will tell all, with impeccable… albeit self-serving logic, that if it had not been for that servile, incompetent Rod Graves, Levi would have had at least three Pro Bowl appearances. If he’s a bust, he’ll suddenly credit Graves with the pick. No doubt, ably supported in his criticisms by Cheesebeef and Ouchie - should he falter. The three amigos; the posting equivalent of bandits crawling down from the hills and shooting the wounded.

They’ll, to their last typed word, deny that Rod had anything to do with turning around a family owned enterprise, set in its ways, into a modern entity capable of establishing a winning tradition.

Never understand how this process of change had to be deferential and incremental; in fits and starts - that trust had to be established one decision at a time because the Bidwill’s had been burned by roughshod saviours in the past.

Should the ultimate goal come to pass, one can be fairly certain that Graves, a temperate man - will deflect all praise to others, in much the way that he accepts today’s criticism without flinching.

:bigyawn: Man, funny for you to accuse anyone of pontificating.

After reading many of the post about race it's very disturbing. A Cardiinal fan sees no color. We all want this team to win. Many of you for whatever reason hate Graves. IN the last few years(he only has the job 5), we have seen many extensions during the season to hold on to our good players. Free agents came and we bought, and even when we lost the FA it for the most part had nothing to do with money, in fact we had the better offer in most cases.

I was frustrated like everyone else about the late signing of Levi. Still only missing the first week he is signed. WE got 6 years instead of 5. If he plays well we wil extend the contract as it escalates in the 5 or 6 year. Again, Graves did a masterfull job of watching the situation play its self out. Quote from Graves it that we had the same basic deal set last week.

BUt Race folks ? Come on..Is this something Pat would stand for...NO!

why not just keep a FOOTBALL thread RELATED to FOOTBALL? Why turn personal on other posters here? I mean people have alledged that the Graves dissenters are racists and now we're scum bandits who crawl from the hill and shoot the wounded? I really think people take this stuff wayyyyyy too seriously. I mean it's as if they take the shredding of a GM who has been completely inept in putting a good product on the field as a personal affront, even though they have nothing to do with what's being taken to task.

They’ll, to their last typed word, deny that Rod had anything to do with turning around a family owned enterprise, set in its ways, into a modern entity capable of establishing a winning tradition.

so I guess that when I applauded Graves for signing Edge, drafting Leinart, signing DG (man was I wrong about that one) and getting Wiz along with Russ Grimm that was actually me denying that Rod had anything to do with it? Good lord, when the man does something good he gets credit, sadly, he's done very little of those things for me to give him credit for and he usually follows up those good moves with moves that destroy their ability to work.
