CLEVELAND (Nov. 16, 2004) -- The Browns waived disgruntled running back James Jackson to make room for a rookie on their roster.
Jackson ran for 554 yards and two touchdowns in 11 games as a rookie in 2001, but carried the ball just 12 times the following year after the arrival of William Green.
Jackson complained during this year's training camp about his diminished role behind Green and Lee Suggs and asked for a trade.
Browns coach Butch Davis said releasing Jackson was a difficult decision, but that it was time to give seventh-round draft pick Adimchinobe Echemandu a chance. The running back spent the first 10 weeks of the season on the reserve-physically unable to perform list because of an ankle injury.
Jackson appeared in 43 career games with the Browns, including 16 starts. He had 1,071 yards and five TDs.
This is the second straight year that Davis has cut an unhappy player midway through the season. Last year, he released Kevin Johnson, the team's leading receiver for four years.
The Browns also activated tight end Keith Heinrich (ankle) from the reserve-non football injury list. Heinrich had eight receptions for 64 yards and two TDs in seven games for the Browns last season.
Cleveland waived punter Ryan Dutton from the practice squad and signed defensive back Brandon Haw to take his place.
