Cardinals rookie receiver Ryan Swope has been held out of offseason work because he is still dealing with the effects of concussions he suffered in college, and coach Bruce Arians is concerned about that.

“Only guy I am worried about is Swope with his head,” Arians said when asked about his rookie class in a conversation with Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, via the Cardinals’ website.

Arians said he was “very, very, very surprised” that Swope wasn’t cleared to participate in minicamp and Organized Team Activities, and he isn’t aware of anything Swope can do, other than hope his concussion symptoms go away with time.

“I’m not sure what he can do, I’m not sure what the doctors are going to do at this point,” Arians said. “I hope . . . because the kid is a great talent, and it would be a shame. But having Austin Collie last year going through this same thing, it’s scary.”

How can Arians be surprised when every scouting report had Swope downgraded because of concussions .

It would be interesting to know what our medical evaluation was. Is this the type of injury that could heal/improve over time, even if he has to sit out this year? Or maybe just a half year?

Because we hired another moron head coach....duh!

He'll be out of the league in three years.

You've got a winner in town who is who we thought he was.

hes likely surprised that the symptoms are still there, not that he had concussions. Most player shave had concuissions and are fine. Maybe this kids not coming back from em.

Oh well, 6th round pick.

Not with a nasty defense that has mostly stuck together.

Does he not know that at the start of the season only 4 defensive players will be starting at the same position they did last year?

Well I guess it could be argued by Aggies that 4 out of 11 could be considered as "mostly".

It's looking more and more like the Cards might have to eat this one. This kid is a real talent, and gutsy to boot. If he hasn't got the cobwebs out by now, no matter how bad he wants to play, the likelyhood that he can overcome this gets slimmer and slimmer.

I am reminded of Kolb, and his attempts to play with these problems. He was gutsy too, but he payed a big price for his gutsiness. It seems likely that neither player may ever be able to overcome this lingering problem. I hope they have not already suffered permanent harm that will cause them problems simply trying to live a normal life.

Should've drafted Stills... How they did not know about this would be absurd, why they took him was a gamble and not a good one.

I don't like gambling on players that have a history of concussions. Even if he did play for the Cardinals I would not like to see him injured on the field with another concussion and possibly suffer irreparable damage. I agree, no surprise here.

Most people (fans and draft followers) didn't hear of any concussion issues, then all of a sudden everybody (media) was talking about concussions but no one uncovered anything other than scuttlebutt.

Even when we were holding him out there wasn't much info. Some of it was implied though.

I'd say this is the 1st time it's all best confirmed.

I also wouldn't blame just Arians since he doesn't turn in the card. It would be on Keim. Still though, seeing his talent, a 6th round pick isn't a huge risk for the type of player he appears to be....when healthy.

Doesn't look good.

This. Does anyone know what symptoms are displayed by RS? Lots of talk but no details yet.

He took the full battery of tests at the Combine and was medically cleared.

Someone obviously knew...he was projected to be taken in earlier rounds (3-4) of the draft from what I recall by many.

I'm not buying the fact nobody from the Cards camp knew nothing about potential concussion issues in the age of scouting!!!

Guess this is what happens when you take on an Aggie or a Sooner on you're roster ;)

Russell Erxleben

When did Arizona draft Russell Erxleben? :D

Hard to believe he was drafted by the Saints 34 years ago.

That year, 1979, was a good draft for the Cards. They took OJ Anderson, Roy Green and Kirk Gibson.

EDIT: Cards have only drafted 4 players from Texas since moving to Arizona. Lance Wilson a 12th round pick in 1992. Leonard Davis, Sam Acho and now Alex Okafor. Lyle Sendlein of course was an UDFA.

This.

If he can turn the corner with the concussions, the Cards got themselves a hell of a WR.

Says you.

He's simply a slot guy & this isn't going to be the Kurt Warner offense part III. Where are his catches coming from? Fitz, Floyd, Roberts? Tell me he's going to be better than anyone of those guys. :mulli:

And that's not even counting the TE pass attempts.

Maybe, but Roberts is a free agent in 2014, and we really don't want to sink more money and resources into the wide receiver position.

I thought Swope’s job was to spread the field as a speed option.

I have a gut feeling that Jaron Brown will step it up in training camp. I'm predicting he will be the surprise of the preseason. Love his physical play. Kind of reminds me of Boldin in that way.

Swope will have to earn his spot once he is ready.

So they pick up some guy in the 5th round next year. Guys like Swope are a dime a dozen.
