The Bryant men's basketball team is not the only college team in Rhode Island with another game on its schedule.
On Sunday night, the WNIT announced that the Bryant women's team will be playing this week as well.
"March is an exciting time in college basketball and we're thrilled that our women's basketball team has earned a chance to play in the postseason," Bryant vice president of athletics Bill Smith said in a statement.
The WNIT revealed 11 automatic qualifiers, and 37 at-large bids for the tournament. Matchups and full schedules will be announced Monday, but the first-round games are set to start Thursday.
According to the WNIT, teams that were the highest regular-season finishers in their conference, but did not receive a bid into the NCAA Tournament or WBIT, were automatic qualifiers. In the case of America East, league champion Vermont is heading to the NCAA Tournament, while runner-up Albany will play in the WBIT.
The Bryant Bulldogs ended their season with a 17-14 overall record and a 10-8 mark in America East. They lost to Vermont in the conference semifinals, 62-45, last Monday after beating Binghamton, 66-63, in the tournament quarterfinals on March 6.
Just who Bryant will play hasn't been revealed yet, but other area teams in the field include Stonehill (17-15), of the Northeast Conference, and UMass (16-14), from the Atlantic 10. The Bulldogs will be making their second postseason tournament appearance in program history. Bryant appeared in the WBI in the 2013-14 season, falling to Fairfield in double OT.
Triple Crown Sports has been running the WNIT since 1998, after resurrecting what was formerly known as the NWIT (1969-1996). Last year, the NCAA launched its own women's tournament, called the WBIT — a 32-team tournament whose field was announced after the NCAA Women's Tournament was seeded. The WBIT is now regarded as the second-tiered postseason women's basketball tournament. The WBIT was given first choice of schools not selected to the NCAA tourney.
Providence qualified for the WNIT last season, and lost to Colgate, 54-41, at Alumni Hall.
WNIT games will be shown on the CBS Sports Network, including the WNIT Championship Game set for April 5.
