SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) -- Kevin Bettencourt scored 20 points and keyed a late 13-2 run as Bucknell rallied past No. 17 Syracuse 74-69 on Tuesday night.
It was the first win for the Bison (2-0) in nine meetings with Syracuse (3-2) and sent the Orange to their second straight loss.
Charles Lee had 18 points and Chris McNaughton had 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Bison.
Demetris Nichols led Syracuse with 19 points, Gerry McNamara had 18, and Terrence Roberts had 12 points and 11 rebounds.
The first meeting between the teams since Syracuse beat Bucknell 104-81 in the 1989 NCAA tournament 104-81 was tight throughout. Trailing 60-56 after Nichols and McNamara hit consecutive 3s for the Orange, the Bison's winning surge began when Lee missed a foul shot and was given another after Roberts committed a lane violation.
Lee converted the extra chance with 4:19 remaining and a steal and layup by Abe Badmus tied it at 60-all.
After the Orange missed three straight times down court, Lee stole the ball from Darryl Watkins in the lane and sent Bettencourt on a fast-break layup that put Bucknell up 62-60 with 2:38 left.
McNaughton then hit a hook in the lane and Bettencourt went 5-for-6 from the free throw line to give the Bison an insurmountable 69-62 lead with 65 seconds left.
McNamara hit a 3 with 19.9 seconds to go to move Syracuse within 73-69.
Syracuse had a difficult time getting untracked and trailed most of the first half, falling behind by as many as eight points. A backdoor layup by Lee gave Bucknell a 24-16 lead with 4:12 remaining before Syracuse rallied with a 10-3 run before the break.
Roberts, who had 10 points and 10 rebounds in the period, slammed home a miss by McNamara, stole the ball and hit another follow shot, then converted a free throw to move the Orange within a point.
Josh Wright held the ball for the final shot, and McNamara hit a 3 from the right corner for a 28-27 Orange lead at the break.
