Buccaneers | Trading down a draft option
Mon, 29 Jan 2007 08:57:26 -0800

Roy Cummings, of the Tampa Tribune, reports the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be looking to upgrade numerous positions this offseason and the club could opt to trade down from their first-round draft choice (No. 3 or 4 overall) this year to accumulate additional draft choices. However, it is unlikely they will slide down too far as the Buccaneers view the 2007 Draft class as seven top prospects deep.

I would think that the 7 are: qbs Russell and Quinn, RB Peterson,Wr Johnson, OT Thomas, DE Anderson and DT Branch. Its possible that DE Adams is on the list and one of the above isn't.

I also think its important that the Cards be careful of not trading down too far. I know it's early as we still have free agency, the combine and workouts and things can change. However the Cards do have a chance to get a blue chip prospect and considering the cost of the #5 pick it has to be worthwhile.

At the risk of being bushwhacked by K9, buzz in Mobil was that Gruden is fascinated by Okoye.

So are alot of people. tremendous motor and attitude - upside. Putting him Adams , Landry and Nelson, that makes 11 elite prospects as far as the Cardinals are concerned.

The Bucs are probably going to be in position to grab Calvin Johnson. I cant see them taking Okoye over him. But strange things happen on draft day. It never goes like I expect it to go

He is a DT and his size is 6' 2" 287 lbs. Everyone was surprised at his wiegh in for the Senior Bowl as he was listed at 313 lbs. But he had an amazing week and is only 19 years old. Would he be a reach when the Bucs pick at #3 or #4 (depending on the coin toss with the Browns)?
IMO Calvin Johnson would be the safer pick but I'm like you in that the unexpected certainly happens on draft day.

Don't Bucs need a QB really bad?
Yes even though they did resign Chris Simms but he was terrible before he was put on the IR. They also need a wr as Joey Galloway is 35 yrs old. Additionally they only had 25 sacks and need to improve their defensive line.
Bottom line is they have many needs. They could take Quinn QB, Johnson WR, Anderson DE or

Gruden struck gold the last time he coached the Senior Bowl when he worked with and became enamored with Cadillac Williams.

In light of that...the very reason why Gruden wants to coach the Senior Bowl prospects...here's what I think he will do:

He will trade down a couple of spots thinking that Okoye will still be on the board...if he can't, I think he will still go with Okoye.

In the second round...he will hope for Adam Carriker...and may go with Carriker's teammate Jay Moore if Carriker is gone or if he can't find a way to trade up to get Carriker.

The Bucs' defensive line, once the face of the organization, needs major rehauling...Gruden addressed the offensive line last year by drafting two present and future starters in G Davin Joseph and T Jeremy Trueblood.

The Bucs need a WR...so it is conceivable that at #4 they may take a long look at Dwayne Jarrett or Ted Ginn...neither of whom is projected that high at the moment. IMO, Calvin Johnson is a Top 3 lock.

If Gruden goes ahead and takes Okoye...and drafts Carriker or Moore in the 2nd round...he may take a run at WR Jason Hill in round three.

i think they will mostly likely grab calvin johnson, assuming that he is still there. he and galloway would really help each other imo. however i really really really really really like okoye, the question gruden has to ponder is how much do the other teams like him--in other words how far down could he really go to still have a shot at okoye

Okoye should go top ten based on his Senior Bowl week. Gruden could take him when he picks.

Carriker had a great Senior Bowl week and game. He is now being projected as a mid first round pick.

How does a 19 year old apply for the NFL draft?

Many of the Jet fans on NFLDRAFTCOUNTDOWN want Adam Carriker to be the Jets first round pick.

I'm beginning to think Russell and Quinn will slip as neither are bonofied 1st round prospects and with the glut of RB's coming out next year Peterson may not be a lock for a top 5 pick. I think we just need to wait till the combine to see how things fall out. The "top 5 or 10" will become more obvious then and the needs and wants of those who draft before us will start to surface.

not many agree with you, but i personally wouldn't want either of them even if we didn't have leinart--i would take thomas/johnson/okoye/peterson/nelson/anderson/adams/branch instead

If we didnt have Leinart I would be ga ga for Russell. Reminds me of Culpepper. Al Davis should be put away if he passes on Russell. What if the kid wants Quinn? Will Al let him have his way?
