Buster going to Detroit?

By MICHAEL LEWIS
Staff Writer
DAYTONA BEACH -- Buster Davis may be headed to his second NFL team in as many weeks.

The former Mainland and Florida State star linebacker, unexpectedly released by the Arizona Cardinals on Friday night, is headed to the Detroit Lions practice squad, according to his mother.

Jackie Davis, speaking by phone Monday evening, said Davis was en route to Michigan from Arizona to sign with the Lions.

But a report in the Detroit Free Press newspaper lists the Lions' practice-squad members, and Davis is not among them. The paper names seven other players, and said that there is still one spot open for another player, which could be Davis.

In the NFL, the practice squad is a group of players who can work out with the team each week but are not active for games.

"He's real excited about it, because Detroit has Ernie Sims, one of his old teammates at Florida State," Jackie Davis said. "He didn't sound upset or anything to me (about being cut.)"

Davis, who could not be reached for comment Monday, was a third-round draft pick of the Cardinals in April and seemed assured of making the NFL roster.

Also Monday, former Seabreeze and Bethune-Cookman wide receiver Eric Weems was signed to the Atlanta Falcons' practice squad. Weems had been released Saturday by the team.

Good for Buster. I was really hoping that he would be able to overcome his size to be a good player in the NFL. Watching a lot of FSU games, and I thought that he had a good chance. I didn't expect to see him in another uniform so soon though.

So does he still pocket his 600K bonus money from us if he signs with another team?

From what I read elsewhere, yes. That was all up-front signing bonus money.

It's tough to hang this flop on the Cardinals' front office. There really is not test to show if a player is capable of giving up. We gave Buster every opportunity to develop his potential and he said "No thanks".

Buster came in, underperformed, and told the Cards to stick it when they offered him a spot on the practice squad. He is now public enemy #1 IMO. He's a quitter. He has no heart. I hope does go to Detroit and gets rolled.

He wasn't one of the best 53 on the team, but rather than wanting to improve, Buster took his ball and went home. The fact that he is still not signed to any other team tells me he didn't reject our offer for a better one. He just flat-out quit. There is no one to blame for that but him.

There is a theory posted by a reader on AZCentral that was intriguing. The gist of it is that Buster and the 49ers wanted each other and this was a way for them to hook up without "tampering".

I think that is a little far-fetched, but I do know the Buster we drafted is not the same Buster from his collegiate days.

That rumor monger be me.

I just had trouble handling the disconnect between an "effort guy" and leader in college who wasn't making the commitment here after he got to the pros.

The only thing I could conclude was that Buster either (a) had "issues" with position coach Billy Davis or (b) was "taking a dive" in order to bail out of here (with the Niners and Singletary making logical sense).

I did describe my thinking as "paranoid", far fetched and a "conspiracy theory." Assuming the report that the Lions picked him up is true, it looks as though my theory was wrong.

He's still not on the Lions. And I really liked that theory. I'm ready to give you credit when it comes true. I'm just not holding my breath. Good thoughts, though.

This whole scenario speaks volumes about this kid's character. Had he not been a third round draft pick, based on how overmatched he seemed physically and mentally, he really didn't even earn an invitation to the practice squad. First to not even be all that upset about being cut (if what his mom says is true) and then turn down the PS invitation from a team that had already invested quite a bit in him, shows that his character is highly questionable. Remember...he's the one who came to Arizona and said he had much to prove.

The odds are he's not going to make much of a splash in Detroit either...sure he has his buddy Ernie Sims there, but the pitiful, lackluster way Davis played in pre-season, the best he can hope for is to become a part of Sims' entourage.

Does anyone have a brief explanation how the practice squad works in regards to activating a player in case of injury or whatever to a roster player?

I think this speaks volumes about his character. If I were in his shoes, I would feel some obligation to return to the team that drafted me after he cleared waivers even if it is the PS. IMO, it looks like take the money and run.

Mainstreet: Teams can promote PS players to the 53 man roster at any time, but must release someone or put an injured player on the IR to clear a space. Anyone on the PS can be claimed by another team who must then add that player to their 53 man roster, but the team that has his PS rights can elect to keep their own player by promoting him to their roster, thus deeming the other team's claim null and void.

I agree with you about Davis' take the money and run...it almost makes one wonder whether he may have tanked it all along so he could go join his buddy, Ernie Sims, in Detroit. But..looking at Davis on an NFL field versus the best players in the world, he just cannot match up physically as an ILB in the pros. His NFL career would seem moot at this point.

Thanks for the explanation Mitch.

It would seem to me that a team who needs help from a player on another team's PS could raise havoc if they are willing to drop a player from their roster.

Yeah, they can, Mainstreet. In fact, we saw how vindictive Bill Belichick was when the Vikings put in a claim for TE Garrett Mills, whom BB wanted to keep on his PS. BB threatened to take Vikings PS candidate and did so by claiming one of their top projected PS keepers, a LB from Michigan St. named David Herron.

Doesn't happen that often though.

Just think about it. They have their own PS to draw from first if they have an injury, and they also have their own contact list of street free agents who already know their system, which would be better then a young PS player from another team who doesn't now your system.

So Buster is too good to play for us, but hes willing to play for the Lions .. ??

Thats a big step backwards to me ... We are an up and coming team and to me the Lions are still dysfunctional ...
