That's not a slap on the wrist at all. I figured he'd only get 2.

They had to do more than 2 games considering he did almost the exact same thing in March and got 2 games then. He's a repeat offender. And 5 games is more than a slap on the wrist when compared to the NBA's usual suspensions. But I still think they should have done more. That type of foul is unacceptable and 5 games and 700k fine isn't a strong enough message IMO.

At that point he knew the game was lost. It was a blatant cheap shot which it is very fortunate Barrera was not seriously hurt. He should have gotten 20 games. That would have been a better message

$700,000. Weak.
if that was the fine...that's a lot of money for one stupid play. I think his reputation as a person really took a hit. he will pay for that. Honestly he will be lucky if the lakers give him a second chance. I think they will, but he can't have that happen again or he will be done.

I don't know why everyone thinks they need to blow up this team. you can't win every year. they just need to add some younger athletes to help kobe break down the defense. like barkley said..the mavericks are probably the only team in the league that could match the lakers length. their length and talent in the front court is usually an advantage. they just need to add another player or two and they can still win a title next year.

In a van...down by the river.
I think he should be hung upside down tied at the feet from a 10 ft basketball rim while a bunch of Dallas area 5th graders beat on him for awhile.....totally vulnerable to their little fists of fury.

I don't think he got fined more that the 25K for removing his jersy... the 700K is how much he will lose from a five game suspension without pay.

More than expected but still not enough. His actual long-term loss will be bigger than this which is good.

I was really surprised that Barkley and Smith thought it was excessive on Inside the NBA.

Only 5 games and $700,000?

I'm not even a Laker fan (far from it) but this is silly. A slap of the wrist might be one game. Do you know how many times in NBA history someone has been suspended 5 or more games? If you throw out the Detroit brawl, less than 10. No slap on the wrist no matter how hard you try to spin it.

That just shows how much of a joke the NBA is.

If you or I had done that to someone, we'd be arrested for assault. He could have permantantly injured Barea. It was premeditated, and deserved minimum 20 games.

5 games out of 82 IS a slap on the wrist, no matter HOW you try to spin it.

Same for a lot of things in sports, in general.

Yeah $700,000 is a slap on the wrist, lol...

The play wasn't even that horrible, not the first time someone got shoved or undercut purposedly in the air. The size difference between Bynum and Barea exaggerates it.

Dirty play but never warrants a historical fine or suspension.

You have got to be kidding me. It was not a basketball play, it was intended to injure and it absolutely WAS that bad. The league has gone a long way to restricting this kind of behavior over the last decade or so but even if this had occurred in the 70's, it would have been considered "that horrible".

Raja Bell was suspended one game for taking Kobe's head off.

Yeah, it was a pretty dirty play but Kobe wasn't airborne at the time and it was an outstretched arm rather than a forcefully thrown elbow. It was dirty, BUT, it wasn't as dirty. Also, he didn't do it on the heels of having just cheap shotted another player in almost the same manner.

Apparently, you didn't even see it. Barea wasn't shoved or just undercut. He was deliberately elbowed forcefully to the upper rib cage while he was at his apex laying the ball in the hoop. It very well merited what he got if not more.

I tried to delete the comment, because I forgot that Bell was suspended for a playoff game.

5 games is consistent with other punishments.

I also think a closeline is a closeline, and it is potentially much worse than the "forcefully thrown elbow."

For those of you thinking Bynum being out $700,000 is a stiff penalty...he still stands to make over $10,000,000 next year. Cry me a frickin' river.

He wasn't elbowed get real. Bynum shoved his forearm into him. Obviously it was deliberate and dirty but these plays have happened before.

Anyone remember when Shawn Marion got deliberately undercut by a Jazz player some years ago? That was every bit as dirty or dangerous because he got turned upside down basically.

Now if it was the next 5 PLAYOFF games, that would be something.

that's really what it should be... doing it at the end of the playoffs means he kind of gets away with it. any playoff suspensions that can't be met during that playoff run should effect the player in his next one.
