Byrnes said the D'Backs might be aggressive come trading deadline

The club, seemingly lifeless last season, is making a habit of big comebacks. It features a stunningly effective late-inning relief combination - Luis Vizcaino to Brandon Lyon to Jose Valverde. And rookie first baseman Conor Jackson, one scout says, "has hit two of the hardest balls I've seen hit all year."

In spring training, the Diamondbacks talked about possibly promoting shortstop Stephen Drew at mid-season, but it might not be necessary. Drew is off to a hot start in Triple-A, but the D-Backs are getting strong defense from shortstop Craig Counsell and second baseman Orlando Hudson. The principal beneficiary is right-handed sinker-baller Brandon Webb, who is 4-0 with a 2.22 ERA and could win the Cy Young Award.

Another thing about the Diamondbacks: Their lineup is heavily left-handed, creating problems for the other N.L. West clubs, none of which features more than one left-handed starter.

The Padres' only lefty starter, Shawn Estes, is on the disabled list with a strained left elbow. The Giants' lefty, Noah Lowry, is expected back Monday after missing nearly a month with a strained side muscle. The Dodgers are considering dropping their sole lefty, Odalis Perez, from their rotation.

The Diamondbacks eventually figure to need rotation help — their starters don't work enough innings - but their budget-minded trades of third baseman Troy Glaus and right-hander Javier Vazquez created payroll flexibility for a mid-season acquisition.

"We've positioned ourselves to be able to be aggressive," G.M. Josh Byrnes says. "If the opportunity is there, we'll take a shot."

All five N.L. West teams stand a reasonable chance of winning the division. The Diamondbacks are one of those teams — and therefore, a contender.

The D'backs ARE NOT a contender. Who cares if you win the division just to get swept out of the first round? You are contender when you have a shot at the pennant, which the Dbacks have NO chance of.

I'm going to be really upset if they try to sign some veterans midseason or try to get someone to push them over the hump as it were. If we are going to be making midseason trades, lets try to get rid of aging, useless veterans and get some pitching prospects.

I do not think we will trade away our chance at a good future just to win the West. While I could see us picking up a mid-rotation starter who is younger than 30, I cannot see us using our good prospects to do so. Young is going to be up here around that time to man center, so he won't be traded. Q is our starting left fielder next year, so he won't be traded.

Perhaps some of our mid-level prospects would be let go for a starter.

I think the Diamondbacks should try to improve to win the division this year. It would be a great thing if they could win the NL West in the year that they were supposed to suck while waiting for their prospects to come up next year. I wouldn't mind them making some trades or signings as long as they don't use any of their top prospects, which I doubt they will do anyway. I wouldn't mind trading a young guy though if we can get rid of Ortiz also and get a nice 26-28 year-old player who will help us in the future.

Regardless of contention or not, we need to find a way to acquire 2 above average starters, one stud. If that happens at the break fine, but it will be taken care of.

I wouldn't mind them trading for a top notch ace starter.

One way I could see this happening is if there's a guy out there that is young talented and who's contract is up at the end of the season. The Dbacks wouldn't have to give up top teir prospects under these circumstances and Byrnes has already said the Dbacks will be players in free agency during the off season anyway.

Does anybody know of a stud starter who fits this description?

There are only a few SPs that might fall into that stud category...the following SPs are free agents at the end of this season.

Schmidt
Contreras
Pettite
Mulder
Zito

I would be dissapointed if we got any of those right handers but there are a couple of those lefties that I would love us to get. Zito, Buerhle or Davis....make it happen Byrnes!

The following are a list of pitchers who I'd like to see the Diamondbacks at least construct an effort to sign, or peak the free agent values of.

The others are either too old, too much of an injury risk, too sporatic or just wouldn't be good fits for the Diamondbacks.

RHSP:
Joe Mays
Kip Wells
Jason Marquis

LHSP:
Ted Lilly
Mark Mulder
Barry Zito
Doug Davis
Mark Buerhle (Team Option)

Guys like Wells, Lilly, Mays and Marquis could be decent #3-#4 guys. Davis is pretty underrated and has seen his numbers improve since leaving that bandbox in Arlington, TX and could be a respectable addition to the staff, Wells would be an upgrade as the fifth pitcher in the rotation, and guys like Zito, Buherle and Mulder are ideal, unless the bidding gets rediculously out of control.
