We've been with DirecTV for about ten years now. Very happy with the service and they throw us freebies just about every 2 years when contract renewal comes around. We use Cox for Internet, but would love to switch if there was another comparable service, but there isn't. We had terrible issues with Cox's TV and customer service.

I will be checking out the new Dish system at my FIL's soon. I'll report back on what I thought of the new "Hopper" system.
The Hopper?

Cox has some of the worst customer service out there. They arent cheap by any means either. People like Brian say they worry about an outage on Satellite due to weather?? You live in AZ. In NV. I have lost my signal literally 2 times in like 12 years. When I had cox I would get outages 2 to 3 times a year sometimes all day. I would call and all they would say is "sorry were working on the system in your area" or some garbage like that. They are just plain awful. The interface on their DVR's is complete garbage too.

Wow. My experience is totally the opposite. I had DirecTV for 5 years and hated every minute of it. They kept sucking me in with discounted packages that I never watched. I have no need for Sunday Ticket, and with DTV playing games with the Pac-12 net, I went back to Cox. Installer guy showed up 30 minutes early, just like they used to do when I had them back in late 90s/early 00s. He was in and out in 15 minutes. Got everything I want to watch for about $30.

My DirecTV went out every storm. They'd have to send a technician out to fix the receiver or fix the box, which always had issues they could never resolve. The technicians were scary, scary, scary ex-con types I would never let near my house if women or children were around. Most issues with Cox I can fix myself.

No thanks to DTV. Never again.

DirectTV customer service kills Cox without question. I was stuck with Cox when I lived in AZ. Hated it!

I have had a satellite for about 6 years in Chicago. Had more trouble with cable here that with a satellite. Lots more.

I have Cox and have every channel and HD damn near every channel too.. I live in PHX so I don't need Sunday ticket because I get to see every game for the Cardinals.. And I don't have to worry about a storm or winds knocking out my service..

This. I do an analysis every few years and the price always works out to be about the same in the long run when compared to satellite. I wouldn't even consider switching from cox internet.

We just had this chick named Sandy come through.

My DirecTV had signal all night long. As long as you have good dish placement..... Signal strength will barely ever be an issue.

Good to hear. I have had way more outages with DirectTv that relate to unknown actions by my cleaning lady than the dish on the roof.

Blizzards don't bother it, but mysterious Ukrainian ladies do. :)

I have had both Cox and DTV.

DTV is actually cheaper for me every month than when I had Cox.

I hate our Cox service. Screens are constantly pixilated. DVR's skip around. We call tech support and they never help. They send people out and they can't fix it. When we moved into the house, I agreed to a 2 year commitment in order to get a discount. I am counting down the months until I can get out from under that and move on to Direct TV.

The one good thing I will say about Cox is that they never seem to have these disputes about carrying certain channels. They aren't like DISH, which seems to drop channels like Fox Sports AZ, etc. from time-to-time during contract negotiations. And they already have the Pac-12 channel, so that is nice. Direct TV has NFL Sunday Ticket, though, so that trumps just about anything else.
