Bruce Arians asked about Calias:

"Calais played the way he's supposed to play"

"Thats What he's supposed to do. Thats what he gets payed to do"

"Thats the way I expect him to play every week"

"He had a couple tackles for a loss a sack and a fumble recovery"

"so do I think its a good game? No thats the way he's supposed to play FINALLY!!"

Call me crazy but with the FINALLY remark I think its safe to say Arians hasn't been happy with the play of CC lately either… I know this was talked about in another thread…

Sure sounds that way. If we could get CC to play "the way he is supposed to play finally" the rest of the season that would be wondeful.

I like the way Arians is challenging him. I think this is probably indicative of what he expects from all on the team. Super high standards. What's wrong with that?

2nd highest-paid player on the team. 1.5 sacks before last night. He deserved the heat.

Nice job of relaying BA's statements about CC's play lately Shane. I hope that BA is able to get a fire going in CC's belly for the rest of the season. I would like to see him take ownership of his leadership responsibilities like Patrick Peterson has this year. That would be such a big help in shutting down our opponents the rest of the way out for this year. He needs to lead more by showing how to play rather than just talking the talk. Nice post.

Calais said on 620 today, and has said in the big red rage several times, that BA has not been happy with him once this season until after this game. Rightfully so in my opinion. The guy is such a beast, and we have all seen him be a huge factor on defense. This debate came up recently and there were two theories put forward;

Either CC is overrated by us or he is hurt.

I tend to think it's a 3rd option with a bit of 1 and 2 sprinkled in. He is probably not as good as we think he should be based on his sheer size, and he is definitely hobbled he said as much on the Big Red Rage, but I honestly think that with CC it's intensity and an effort level that is not always topped off.

For example, on the first drive yesterday I was furious with him, he was clearly not giving 100% effort and they were running right by him. Then I saw Betcher getting on his butt on the sideline and boom, calais started playing WAY better.

BA has a pretty good feel for these guys and he clearly feels that Calais needs to be coached up and not hugged, so I trust that judgement.

I also think that Calais misses Dockett alongside him on the line, and honestly probably Dan Williams too. He is the anchor of that group now, and I'm not sure if he's really that type of guy. We need a beast to play alongside him to draw some attention and allow Calais to just play instead of worrying about leading as well.

Then again, I'm not a psychologist or a football coach so obviously you can take my opinion with a big fat grain of salt. lol. But that's just what I think.

Agree 100%. Let's hope he takes this game as a momentum builder for the remainder of the season and post-season. We could use a dominant, three down defensive lineman.

I really just think it's the part in the bold.

If we don't go for an ILB in the first round(We REALLY need to though, regardless) next year, I wouldn't mind drafting a DE.

Bert, I have to respectfully disagree with your assumption that CC needs a beast Like Dockett to play beside him so that he can just play. CC is built for beast mode. He has the size, the athleticism, the speed, and the endurance to be able to play like a beast, and the only thing keeping him from doing it is his own lack of will to do so. He is the one who needs to play like a beast in order to inspire others, who do not have his ability, to play hard too. BA has it right. CC takes too many plays off. He is too passive. He has shown that he can be a beast when he wants to. He just needs to want to more than he does.

CC will be much better, when we get Frostee Rucker back. Frosted seems to work very well with CC, and I'm not sure why. But CC just seems to feed off of FR when both are on the field. JMO.

Exactly. CC is the star he's the one who should make things easier for everyone else. If he needs someone else to make him better than he's not a star. He's getting paid like one he needs to play like one. He's more than capable of dominating a game by himself his motor just runs hot and cold.

Yep 1000%

He's the guy paid to be that guy that commands the attention and to make everyone else's job easier not the other way around.... If he NEEDS someone else to make him dominant he should have never got the contract he got...He has been near invisible much of the season and there is no excuse... Apparently Arians agrees...

Calais just does not have a mean streak like other DTs which would make him a force. He comes across as a gentle giant type. I am not saying he does not play without any aggression (anyone on the line in the NFL has to have some) but not much compared to elite players where emotions run like a Viking berserker... if he really played mad, I doubt most double teams could contain him with his size and ability and therefore needs some unique anger management because he seems to have his managed on the shelf lol

You guys make good points here. My point wasn't to defend him saying this is what he needs or that it's ok. Was just speculating on causes for his lapses in effectiveness.

But then again, Calais took charge in the locker room after the Vikings game. I hope whatever kick in the butt he got that got him going against the Vikings carries over the rest of the season!

Campbell works hard, I don't believe there is any doubt in that; but he doesn't seem to have that manic intensity that would make him a SUPERSTAR!
