Plot

Modern Warfare 2 is set several years after the conclusion of Call of Duty 4. The radical Russian Ultra-nationalist organization has returned to prominence under the leadership of Vladimir Makarov, a former associate of Imran Zakhaev with his own ambitions. Makarov has publicized Zakhaev's death as an act of martyrdom to garner support for his cause, enabling him to build a strong power base in Russia over the years. Fearful of Makarov's growing influence, the global community established Task Force 141 to counter the threat posed by the resurgent Ultra-nationalists.

Campaign

Infinity Ward CCO Jason West stated that Modern Warfare 2 will include missions in Russia, a military base in Kazakhstan, a desert area in Afghanistan, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. New features include the ability to dual wield handguns

Multiplayer (Special Ops)

Modern Warfare 2 will feature a cooperative mode entitled Special Ops, which consists of independent missions similar in design to the "Mile High Club" epilogue mission from Call of Duty 4.These missions will take place in a variety of locations from the campaign mode, but are related to story of the campaign itself. Special Ops supports cooperative play for up to two players, and can be played alone, in split-screen locally with another player, or online with another player. It includes such scenarios as a snowmobile race, a battle alongside U.S. Navy SEALs, and fending off a wave of 50 enemies at once.

Special Ops is divided into separate groups of missions with changeable difficulty levels. The third group, "Charlie", includes the mission "Breach and Clear", where the objective is to just make it to the end of the level. At the beginning of a mission, players select what weapon to use from several scattered around a room before the actual mission commences. Once a choice has been made, a nearby wall is breached and the mission begins. At the end of each mission, a statistics screen displays how long the player took to complete the level and how many kills were scored. Successfully completing a mission earns the player stars, with missions completed on Veteran difficulty rewarding up to three stars. These stars can be used to unlock further missions in the mode.

Mutiplayer (Online)

The online multiplayer mode of Modern Warfare 2 retains the same experience points and unlockable reward system of Call of Duty 4, but also introduces several new features. Aside from new weapons and equipment, 15 different kill streak rewards can be unlocked and selected by the player. Among these is the ability to receive a supply drop after four kills, a predator missile strike after 5 kills, and to call in a strike by an AC-130. It is also now possible to upgrade perks to a "pro version". Another new addition to online multiplayer, is in game host migration, which means that if the match host leaves the game, players will remain (instead of being reset to the game lobby like in Call of Duty 4) while a new host is selected and the game resumes.
gunship after achieving 11 enemy kills in a row.

Downloadable content

Activision announced that two downloadable map packs will be released for Modern Warfare 2.Microsoft stated at E3 2009 that these map packs would be made available for the Xbox 360 via Xbox Live before they would be released for other platforms. Robert Bowling said that community response to the game and the first two downloadable map packs would be used in designing other potential map packs.

This will be the FPS of the year. I can't wait. There is so many things about this game that I am waiting for. Also, the fans will help shape the down load content (map packs). Sounds like they will either poll or base it on the most played maps or something.

Pretty much the baddest game around!

Pretty much the lamest IMO. I cannot believe what they charge for these damned games. 65.00 bucks after tax. My son started playing this at 2 PM after school and had it beat by 6:45 PM. That is un-freaking real and one helluva ripoff IMO.

ON the other side he had Uncharted 2 on PS3 and it took him at least 5 hours a day for about a week to beat it. At least that is some decent game play.

COD 2 MW is an absolute joke.

The online component is where this game really shines Shane...limitless replay value, and well worth the purchase price.

Same option on uncharted 2 and a whole plethura of other games that have limitless online play as well as a long single player version.

The reason why MW1 won game of the year is the same reason why MW2 will win game of the year. The online play is by far the best part of any game on the market. Im willing to say this series is one of the best online series of all-time.

Never understood the fanfare for online play in shooters. It is the most repetitive form of game play around. Staying on the same few maps running around trying to kill each other over and over and over again. When you get killed there is no real penalty all you do is have an instant re spawn and then back at it again and again and again.

You just don't get it Shane. :D Nobody buys Halo or COD for the campaign, if it's good, that's a bonus. Love Halo and ODST, maybe will give COD a shot one of these days.

yeah.... The online play is pretty awesome... Me personally, I play groundwar which is a mix of "capture the flag (Domination) and deathmatch"...

MW2 actually has 17 different maps, and with 10 minute sessions, in theory, you wouldn't play the same map more than 1-2 times in a 3 hour session...

Its a ton of fun, especially with friends....

I will log some heavy time on this tonight. The one thing I am disappointed in is that the System Link Play is limited to 2 players I have heard. WTF???

Why is it that Bungie and the Halo franchise continue to be the only ones that "get it" on the 360? I just don't understand how they could leave off the ability to have some awesome LAN parties with a game that is suppose to be the ultimate multiplayer FPS. In my mind no matter how good this game is online, it can't be the best multiplayer experience until that is added as a feature.

That's usually why I buy most FPS on my PC versus Xbox 360 with the exception of the Halo franchise.

At minimum it should be 2 players per console split screen with up to 18 players multiplayer offline. That is not unreasonable IMO.
