This is really the only smart play for Newton. He had a ridiculous 'media day' in which not only did he only do the things he's great at, but he didn't even invite scouts. He'll have a pro day which will be on his own turf with his own receivers. Newton needs to show what he can do in a neutral environment when he doesn't have most of the factors in his favor. A good showing at the combine will really elevate his stock.

I agree. Great move by Cam.

It was also reported that Blaine Gabbert will not fully participate, especially in the throwing drills.

Others QBs have done the same, but it makes you wonder...hmmm.

Stout - by all accounts that media day went over very well ..... they couldn't stop tasting him on espn & NFL network and when the media are ex-QBs and players who will spend the next round doing radio interviews and TV spots about how great you looked it's impactful

He definitely has a plan in place to show a quick progression in what he can do and the things he's picking up on ... it looks like he is going to try and do a series

Here is what you think I can do from the season

Here is what I did at media day

Here is what I did at the combine

Here is what I did at my pro day

See the progress I've made in just a few months ... The only knock you have on me is my ability to adapt and learn and i'm going to show against that by showing constant improvement (even if holding back things that I could already do just to make it look like I'm picking it up now)

Could go either way. A poor showing will hurt his stock and confirm in the minds of many the doubts they have about him. A good showing will erase it all and probably secure him being drafted in the top 4.

Right, Dew.

However, the way this kid throws the ball and the raw strength of his physique will be on full display---and whether he misses a couple of passes or not---he will have scouts and viewers gaping in awe.

NFL Network must be delirious...with the news that Newton will be fully participating, their ratings are going to go through the roof.

MO, by all accounts scouts found his media day to be a joke. Nobody of worth was present and he only did things that played to his strengths.

I am still so-so on the kid but he does get a point in his favor for this.

Gabbert gets a point against him, and he already has a lot of points against him in my book.

Heard Ponder wont throw either. SMH

Well they were pouting because they weren't allowed to attend. :)

There was a video posted on the site that showed Trent Dilfer asking for certain patterns etc for Cam to throw and he did them. How much of that may have been staged or if Dilfer was asking for stuff that isn't hard etc I don't know.

I doubt he did anything to hurt himself on any level at his media event. Will it get him drafted earlier then he would have, not by itself it won't but it won't cause his stock to drop so win win.

You may have a few upset that they didn't get invited to the party or try to discount what happened because it doesn't matter because they weren't there

However, being on a constant loop over a number of days on national sports broadcasts, radio interviews, etc it will make them take note.

The combine & his pro day are for the scouts.

The media day was to set the stage for the message he wants to deliver and get him some hype & press for being the top QB in the draft and a top pick - it was an overwhelming success

You can't discount the excitement that came from that and even the grumpiest of scout was sure to peek at the video and breakdowns on ESPN from that workout

The NFL does not allow any team's personnel or scouts to attend any workouts prior to the Combine. After the Combine teams can attend the college day workouts and invite players in for individual workouts.

Newton is smart to fully compete in the Combine. He will do well.
Mitch may be right in predicting him as the first player taken in the Draft.

I think everyone expects Newton to look good in his workouts. It's the X's & O's and team interviews that will be a more determining factor for him.

Respect his decision. Shows he has nothing to hide. If he comes out and blows everyone away at the Combine, there will be no more excuses for the Panthers not taking him first overall.

I am salivating at the prospect of Newton doing the one on one film breakdown with Gruden. That has potential to be a hoot. Not to mention the Wunderlich. Can you buy a score on that?

Maybe they sent him a check.

They sent his Dad a check, so it is OK.

lol, Joe!...great one!

Yes, but there is breaking news out of Atlanta that the elder Newton is negotiating as we speak with TNT to air a prime-time special of his son's own combine to be conducted in the Georgia Dome this Friday Night at 8 PM and hosted by Ernie Johnson and special guest analyst Joe Theisman.

The show will feature a breakthrough in televising technology as TNT will introduce the world to the Cam cam. No one is sure yet what this means.

Apparently, the only hold-up at this point is that they are trying to sign Katie Couric to administer the Wonderlic and the post-combine interviews...the highlight of which is the part where Couric asks Cam what his favorite magazines are.

It doesn't end there.

Saturday night...from a posh, swanky banquet room of an undisclosed Country Club in Greenwich, Connecticut, Cam and Cam's father will be joined by Jim Gray.

At the end of the hour-long prime time father-son chat with Gray, Cam will announce the only team he will be willing to play for.

At 9:58 PM Saturday Night:

"I am going to take my talents to..."

That's a little freaky. Homie needs to fire his Dad as an adviser and tell his crazy ass the check is in the mail. Why bring the circus to town? Why act like Lebron did? Isn't it big enough that he is going to the combine and the other QB's don't want no part of it?

This "Dad" is no good for business, probably one of the first things Whiz will whisper in Cam's ear. :D

Foxsports has a article were Cammie claims to be an 'icon'...

http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/Cam-Newton-entertainer-icon-interview-022211

Uhh... no thanks!

here is the thing... He put up one of the greatest statistical college football seasons ever and ended it leading an Auburn team to the national title in his first season starting at the college level...

so to a degree he is somewhat of an "icon"

But HOPEFULLY this puts doubt in Buffalo's mind f drafting him.. No one can be an entertainment icon in Buffalo just ask Willis McGahee...

I think this may be the only way he falls to us, because Carolina and Buffalo in the end will seriously consider him, but if they think he won't be happy there, they may pass, and CamVille here we come! :D

This move is not surprising. He needs all the publicity he can get to ensure being selected #1 overall. Like Zeno said Teams are wanting to see what this kid has mentally.

Declaring yourself an Icon isn't very humbling. You don't hear these things come out of sucessfull players mouths. Kurt Warner, Joe Montana, Peyton Manning, Terry Bradshaw, Troy Aikman, Jerry Rice, Emmit Smith, or any other great claim that they are a icon. They let the media and fans say that.
