Practice was held outside today on the lower field. It was an extremely light practice for the most part.

Started off with really light 11 on 11 walkthrough. Next was KR walk through.

Then they broke into positional drills which IMO are actually fun to watch. This is where you have a chance to actually watch the footwork and of each and every player. I concentrated watching the LBers. Smoothest and best footwork IMO came from Porter, Haggans, Wahsington, Lenon and Brown. You can see just how quick Washinton is. I still cant get over just how badly pigeon toed Baggs is. Yet he seems to have zero issue with it.

Again they broke into KR walk through which is a complete bore to watch.

Next was 7 on 7 drills which are always fun to watch. It was conducted inside the red zone from the 20 yard line going in. Leinart was not
sharp again completing 3 of 6 passes and throwing an Int to DRC. All three completions were either really short crossing patterns to Fitz or a dump off to Hightower. The other 3 including the INT were anything attempted over 10 yards.

Anderson was just as unimpressive. He went 3-6 and threw an INT to Toler who made a nice play on the ball. He did have one nice fade throw to the impressive rookie WR Stephen William in the back corner of the endzone. But the catch was more impressive than the thro IMO.

Matt's next turn he went 3 for 3 but again they were all dump offs. Anderson went 2 for 3 on his next turn.

Then They started to do 11 on 11 at much closer to full speed. They had just started and Matt threw a pass behind Stephen Spach that should have been INT's by Adams. He just knocked it down.

It was at this point in time when I heard the words "Dad I have to poop" So I had to escort my son to the port of potty's and let him perform his business while practice was going on. So unfortunately I missed most of the 11 on 11 :D

I came back in time to see Skelton throw a 45 yard pass down the left side line to Stephen Willliams #14 who had to slow down and come back to the ball to make a spectacular deep catch. The kid just keeps making play after play. Another case of a great adjustment by the kid and a mediocre throw.

That was about the extent of practice. It should be noted that I hope Grimm gets back soon. The OL was doing a whole lot of standing around during positional drills.

I will have another report up later this evening following the PM practice.

Was listening to Doug & Wolf this morning... they both stated how unimpressive Leinart has looked thus far. They harped on the fact that Whiz is not the type of guy who will start Matt just because he was a first round pick and has been there the longest.. that he'll start whoever he feels is the best option and gives the team the best chance to win. They conceded that Matt will always be given the benefit of the doubt, however, they also said that him being the ordained starter is simply not cemented. And that if Anderson were to somehow go crazy and light things up in camp and during the preseason games, that he would have a very real chance at being the starter come the regular season....

While I always take this sort of camp-talk with a HUGE grain of salt, I do find it more than a little frustrating to see that, now with Kurt gone, Matt still hasn't convincingly grabbed the reigns. It seems he's done and said all of the right things off the field, yet, he doesn't appear to be able to perform consistently enough on the field to eliminate all of this type of conversation.
As Doug said, he does just enough to make you think he'll be a solid starter, and just enough to make you think Anderson would be a better option.... :bang:

Right 82, but the more frustrating thing is that anyone on a Whisenhunt team, regardless of salary or draft position, can start if they play better than the competition.

DA is a former pro-bowler and as inconsistent as Leinart has been, he is not looking like he will beat him out. Also sounds like Hall is edging above Skelton, at least in the last couple of days.

Good points jw7...

Regarding Hall, FWIW - a certain left-handed HOF QB is extremely high on Max. Thinks the Cards are in possession of a diamond in the rough.

By far, the biggest concern. It may come down to preseason to determine who is starting. I'm really disappointed that Matt hasn't taken the bull by the horns. Excellent work Shane thanks for the update.

I can't see keeping a 4th QB. Seems like guys of the caliber of Max Hall are available as FAs almost every year.

Not Shane, but I'm just not excited about Max Hall. It looks like the coaches are shooting him up to #3 over Skelton, but then again I thought Tyler Palko solidly beat out BSP for #3 last year.

#18 Komar looked fantastic the first week of practice. Caught everything thrown his way. Will be super-hard to make the roster, maybe PS.

I know the WR slots are filled, but Breaston and Doucet are having a less than stellar TC.

That he is an alumnus probably has nothing to do with his assessment, right?

I know Mitch included him in his list of players above, but I'd also be curious to know if Byrd is showing anything this year.

I am starting to get excited about this Williams kid; lets hope he can do it in a game.

Alot of athletes are practice allstars and in game duds.

Heck in college on the track team, middle distance; I had three teammates that would routinely beat me (not outwork me, they had more natural talent/speed) in practice, but when we had a meet, I beat them everytime.

Byrd hurt his hamstring today according to Urban. I'm sure he's shown more than that, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

I've always been a Matt backer. But to be honest he just might not make it all. I think he will start unless he really messes up. But that doesn't say much for our chances of success.

Matt's ultimate value was always going to be the fact he's smart and did have great ability to run a game.

I'm not sure he'll ever prove that translates from a college team that was loaded in talent to our team.

We'll know pretty quick, I expect this to be the last year anyone questions him one way or another.

He either steps out there and translates what he was in college which was a very smart QB able to make clutch throws to talented WR's and use a great running game to augment it or he goes bye bye fast.

I really can't get caught up in practice and inter-squad results. In my time in hockey, I saw too many guys who starred or failed when it didn't count.

Exactly, Matt will start if for no other reason than to audition for the job.

The only way he wouldn't is if Anderson just lights it up in pre-season and Matt just sucks.

I don't see that happening and I see Matt starting and then I see the rubber meeting the road and then it'll be over one way or another.

From Urban this morning....

"Whisenhunt said LB Paris Lenon has distanced himself from the other middle linebackers and has shown “a lot of leadership.” That’s a good sign at a position where the Cards need good signs."

Listen the bottom line is that Matt should easily be able to complete better than 50% of his passes in a 7 on 7 drill with zero int's. That really isnt to much to ask. Especially when you know this is your time to grab the bull by the horns and show the coach waht you have. I dont know how many of you have seen these drills but they are run with zero pass rush or pressure on the QB.

I used to routinely watch the likes of Jake Plummer go 100% with a couple of TD's consistently during this drill.

Its not the end all be all but it certainly doesnt breed confidence especially when he isnt doing much in the game type situations either.

Its all red flags. I wanna start seeing more green flags and soon.

That reminds me. During the 11 on 11 walk through and the full speed lenon was calling the plays for teh defense. Dont know if that will hold or not. but today he was.

Shows how much it matters. Leinart has always seemed like a gamer - let's see what happens when the lights come on.
