Can we give some credit to the tackles?

i was a defender of Leonard Davis. Levi Brown stinks. But when you consider we had LD and let him go, forcing the Cards hand on selecting Brown over AP,you can understand some people being upset about that. It was a pretty weak draft for elite talent other than AP or Joe Thomas. Look at the top 10 picks:
1-Jamarcus Russell- absolutely horrible
2-Calvin Johnson-very good but can't stay healthy
3-Joe Thomas-been to the pro-bowl
4-Gaines Adams-already traded
5-Levi-stinks
6-Laron Landry- Vinny Cerrato should've been fired by now.
7-AP- best RB in the league.
8-Jamaal Anderson- haven't heard a peep from him,BTW, after AP and Thomas he was who i wanted..
9-Ted Ginn- may be benched in Mia.
10-Amobi Okoye- playing pretty decent for Denver.

the 2nd best pick may have been the 11th in Patrick Willis. When you look at it in that context, maybe Levi wasn't all that bad. We could've been stuck with Russell, Ginn, Anderson,or Adams.Levi has at least been on the field and been better than them. BUt, it's hard to digest when you had the best player in the NFL fall right into your lap and you say "no thanks".

No way on Brown. He sucked. He sucks. And he will suck...

As for Gandy, I have to say that he did a tremendous job on the Hightower TD in the 3rd quarter. In fact, the entire line was awesome, but Gandy in particular absolutely blew up his guy!

Agreed.

Mike Gandy is playing at a level that is way, way above anything he has ever done in this league. He is not an All-Pro, is undersized, long in the tooth, but still battles and plays solid, IMO.

Levi Brown is a Top 5 pick, and has been a bust so far. I expected a WHOLE lot more from him, and he hasn't even learned to play to the whistle in his first 3 years. Very dissapointing.

Good points... However, the bottom line remains that we had our shot at AP, and we looked the other way...:bang:

Bringing up Alan Branch is a good point.

This could end up an unfortunate situation for Brown seeing as he's just a bad fit for our pass-heavy offense and I don't see that philosophy changing in the immediate future, regardless of all their 'Steelers West' talk.

Branch didn't have an awakening until after he was moved from NT to DE. Does Levi need to go to the left side instead?

Who really looks at other team's failures to make you feel better about the horrible picks that you have made? It doesn't make sense.

i think we could easily see Levi at LT and Big Baby at RT next year. I don't know if that's such a good idea but it may be the case.

If Levi can't get his penalties under control, I'd rather just see him replaced by Big Baby.

But I will admit that our tackles have been more good than bad this year.

 Hey at least Gandy tries, Levi (the guy is a "DUD")! It is sad that this is all we have at OT tackles on the team. These two couldn,t start for any other team in the league.

10-Amobi Okoye- playing pretty decent for Denver.

But, how is he doing with Houston, the team that drafted him? ;)

You have to ask yourself which of the two has more to do with Branch finally playing well -

1. Branch losing 50 pounds and took the offseason to heart for a change.
2. Branch playing half of his snaps at DE.

90% of what Branch is doing is becuase of #1 IMO, with a small protion being the staff using him at multiple positions. Branch is playing better because he wants to play better, not because of some sort of position switch.

And for Levi being this so called road grader in the few times he can show it he sure hasnt yet, so I dont buy that arguement one bit. Two, I dont care what he is asked to do or not asked to or what he should be used for, leading the league in penalties with 7 of them in only 6 games is horrid. And if he isnt a pass blocker you would expect to see at least some minimal improvment wouldnt you, in 3 years.

I think they would start for any other team in the NFC West; and I am fairly certain there are a few other teams in the NFL that would be happy to have them.

Just because they are the weak link on an NFC Championship team, doesn't mean they aren't better than several other NFL teams starting tackles.

Not bad Joe...

Cardinals defensive lineman Branch loses weight, finally makes impact
Bob Baum, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS 4 hours, 42 minutes ago

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona Cardinals coveted Alan Branch(notes) so much that they traded up to get him with the first pick in the second round of the 2007 draft.

He's been a big, literally too big, disappointment - until this season. The coaching staff challenged the former Michigan standout to show up weighing less and in better shape, and Branch complied. That gave him his chance, and he's earned a backup role at nose tackle and defensive tackle.

In last Sunday night's 24-17 road victory over the New York Giants, Branch got the first two sacks of his pro career.
"I feel good. I'm at home," Branch said. "I'm actually feeling like I'm more part of the team."

The 6-foot-5 Branch reportedly lost about 25 pounds to meet coaches' demands that he come to training camp at about 335 pounds.

"He had to come in with a specific weight and if he did or didn't, it was going to tell us everything," defensive co-ordinator Bill Davis said. "He didn't have to say one word. That was going to tell us his commitment - and he came in and he made weight."

Then Branch passed the run test, something he had struggled with the previous year.
"So all of a sudden he starts sending us messages as a coaching staff that, 'I want this, I'm ready to commit to working hard and working consistently,"' Davis said.

Branch, from Rio Rancho, N.M., left Michigan after his junior season after being a big part of a Wolverines defence that led the nation in allowing 43.3 yards rushing per game.

He played in 11 games as a rookie, but found himself in the coaches' doghouse after showing up so heavy for the 2008 training camp. He was inactive for 12 regular season games and all four playoff contests.
There was widespread speculation that Branch might be released. He said he never thought that would happen.

"I never thought for a second that they would cut me but it seems like everybody and their mom thought I'd get cut by after training camp," Branch said. "Here I am now doing OK. Maybe later on I can do great and get a little more playing time out there, so we'll see."

Coach Ken Whisenhunt wouldn't say the team was close to giving up on Branch.

"I think our frustration level was higher with Alan at times because we always thought that he could play like he's playing now," Whisenhunt said. "You always would like to see it happen earlier in his career because of where we drafted him. But I can't say now that I'm disappointed at all. We still have aspirations of Alan improving."

Branch is listed as the No. 3 nose tackle behind starter Bryan Robinson(notes) and backup Gabe Watson(notes). But he's also seeing time at tackle behind Darnell Dockett(notes), a position he prefers.

He said he'd never played nose tackle before coming to Arizona, and he likes the freedom of playing outside on the line.

"You can go either side of the guard. You can do different moves," Branch said. "When you're on the nose, you're like three inches away from the centre so you've got to react to that."

Davis said Branch needs to lose even more weight if he wants to be consistently effective on the outside of the line.
So far, Branch has kept his weight consistent.

"He is a guy that for whatever reason the lights came on and he realized certain things that we expected of him in order for him to play," Davis said. "And then when he got his chance to play at the weight we know is best for him, his athleticism comes out."

Branch is just finally glad to be a contributing member of the team.
"I just wanted to make sure they could trust me this year," he said, "they'd know that I'm working hard really to just get my shot on the field."
