can't connect laptop to network

Believe it or not I think we are making progress.

The reason I think that is that if you haven't done this before then you can't have configured the wireless settings on the router.

If that is true there is no way the laptop connects.

When I try to go to the default gateway I get an authoization request asking for name and password. I have no idea what they are

I think we found your problem, you haven't setup the router.

This [unless I am very much mistaken] has nothing to do with your main PC, it is not involved in any way, that was what was confusing the issue.
