The Washington Capitals will be sticking with the same personnel as they continue their California road swing against the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday, but the lines aren't necessarily going to remain the same through these final showdowns of the season.
Coach Spencer Carbery said that the Capitals, winners of five straight, will continue to experiment with different line combinations, something they started to do in Tuesday's 7-4 win over the Anaheim Ducks.
"We actually moved quite a few guys around throughout the game, and I think it's something we'll continue to do, trying to get comfortable with that as we come down the stretch," Carbery said.
Some of those cahnges included playing Tom Wilson on all four lines, while also putting Alex Ovechkin with Pierre-Luc Dubois and Aliaksei Protas to try and find a new look on offense. Connor McMichael also went to play with Dylan Strome, and Lars Eller got a look on the wing.
For the Capitals, there's a method to the madness, as he's aiming to find "advantageous matchups" in different situations.
"(We're) looking for certain matchups, moving guys around, some of it is feel, some of it is based on deployment, whether it's a d-zone, o-zone start, some of it is based on performance in the game. I think it's something that we as a group and our forward group needs to be really, really comfortable with going down the stretch."
