Tempe, AZ – The Arizona Cardinals today announced that the team has signed defensive tackle Devone Claybrooks and released defensive tackle Wendell Bryant.

The 27-year-old Claybrooks (6-3, 292) entered the league with Green Bay in 2001 as an undrafted rookie free agent out of East Carolina. He has gone onto spend time with the Packers, Buccaneers, Browns, 49ers and Cowboys. He played in eight games a year ago for Dallas and in 2002 earned a ring as a member of the Bucs’ Super Bowl championship team.

Bryant was the team’s first-round selection in the 2002 draft out of Wisconsin. He appeared in 29 games with nine starts in three seasons with the team and recorded 51 tackles and one sack in that time. In 2004, he appeared in just three games and recorded one assisted tackle.

“When you look at the numbers and who we have along the defensive line, we just didn’t see a role for Wendell,” said head coach Dennis Green. “We added Chike Okeafor as a starting end opposite Bertrand Berry and behind them you have a pair of veterans who have been starters, Calvin Pace and Peppi Zellner.
Inside we have Kenny King returning which is a big plus. (King) missed all of last year but is back at full strength and ready to contribute. With King, Russell Davis, Darnell Dockett, and Ross Kolodziej you have a strong veteran presence at tackle as well. Add in prospects like Antonio Smith, who was the defensive player of the year in NFL Europe, and Wendell just did not fit in for us.”

Cap implications:

This should clear 445k this year, but leave 1.1 million in dead money on next year's cap.

I am not surprised by this move. I am surprised no one has asked why the Cards didn't trade him for a 5th round draft pick or something. :)

The official end of the Wendell Bryant era in AZ.

wow. even Randal "the thrill" hill caught a few passes. Even Thomas Jones scored a few touchdowns.

What a stinker of a draft pick that was. just awful.

I proclaim Bryant the biggest bust in cardinal history.

Hard to disagree with you.

I guess this makes KING the primary backup at both tackle positions.

No room or role for Bryant but we pick up DT Claybrooks? What does that tell you about Bryant? I'm surprised this didn't happen in February.

I wonder if this is going to be an annual event...

...the annual "Big Whack" before training camp.

Wendell...you sucked.

1)To trade someone, you have to have another team interested in him and so far we don't know of any teams that want him (see LJ Shelton)

2) When teams know you are trying to get rid of a player, they'll wait it out (more often than not) until the player is cut.

I'll miss watching Bryant strolling the sidelines in his shorts and tee shirt. :sarcasm:

Have a nice life.

Bryant had to go and I understand that but,

Gosh darn-it that means Ross will make the team most likely, and make him a 292 lb backup to Davis NT spot. that leaves us with only 1 DT over 300 lbs and he is only 306. Ugh. :barf:

Yeah, I understand the concern. But, this has been a constant trend at DT since Clancy took the helm as coordinator. Clearly, he wants quickness at those spots, not bulk.

DeVone Claybrooks is 6' 3" and weighs 310. He's only played in 13 games in 4 years though.
