Best CB in Cardinals History holds the NFL record for INTs in a season and that record will NEVER be broken. EVER

Forgot to mention:

Knowing this is a contract year, and the buzz I am hearing on the Underground podcast..... I expect Pat P to be a monster this season. Maybe even a comeback POY candidate.

I don't see them giving CBPOY to someone that had a 6 game PED suspension.

He doesn't get challenged by many QBs because his man is rarely open.

There isn't a man who's gameplanned against more on our defense than PP21, and that includes Chandler Jones. It's the reason why the opposite CBs since he came into the league have allowed embarrassing passing stats.

Last season was obviously a tumultuous one for many reasons save for the last quarter, but before that, he'd never missed a game for any reason, had always been known as a top-five at worst CB, and made the pro bowl eight out of nine seasons.

Wayyy too early to write his obituary, despite people's desire to do so.

I strongly disagree.

When he is targeted is receptions allowed isn't anything to write home about.

2019 - 58 targets - 39 receptions - 67% (10 games)
2018 - 52 targets - 30 receptions - 57%
2017 - 60 targets - 28 receptions - 47%
2016 - 71 targets - 43 receptions - 60%

Avg - 57.75%

Richard Sherman through those same season

2019 - 53%
2018 - 62%
2017 - 46%
2016 - 51%

Avg - 53%

This idea that QB's don't target great corners because players aren't open is also rubbish.

Stephon Gilmore has been the best cornerback in the league for 2 years and had 96 targets last year. But that Pats have a great D with a bunch of great corners and safeties so QB's don't have a choice. With P2 they always have. He's always been by far the best cover man and the rest of the team has often been weak.

Gilmore by the way 48% allowed on those 96 targets. 47% the season before.

Would it be fair to say a sub 50% catch rate is a fair measure for a great CB? P2 has only done it twice in '15 and '17 with an average of 62.5 targets. Gilmore had 90+ on both his past 2 seasons.

P2 is a very good CB. I just don't think he's close to the level some fans, some commentators and P2 himself thinks he is.

Let's have a look at some of the notable WR1's he's come up against in recent years. Looking only at teams with a clear WR1 on the field.

2018

Brandin Cooks - 7/9 - 159 yards
Manny Sanders - 6/7 - 102 yards - TD
Tyreek Hill - 7/10 - 117 - 2 TDs
Keenan Allen - 7/7 - 72 yards - TD
Davante Adams - 8/13 - 93 yards - TD
Julio Jones - 6/8 - 82 yards - TD

2017

Golden Tate - 10/12 - 107 yards
Mike Evans - 3/8 - 95 yards - TD
Hopkins - 4/9 - 79 yards - TD
Doug Baldwin - 4/5 - 90 yards - 2 TDs
Doug Baldwin - 5/6 - 95 yards

Baldwin was the clear WR1 on that team, although only ran 40% of his route outside slot.

Either way, it's clear just from going back 2 seasons that WR1's feast against us far more often than not. This idea that P2 is closing down WR1's is a myth.

I’d take Aeneas all day everyday
Me too.

Something that has always frustrated me with Peterson (and I really like him as a player) is how soft he plays. He does not show the mindset of shutting players out of games. He plays off so he can drop coverage and make plays which enables average payers to rack up catches on him unlike a guy like Richard Sherman who tries to contest everything. That lack of mindset is what will keep Peterson from being in the conversation of players like Deion, Aeneas, Charles Woodson and Champ Bailey.

I totally agree.

I’ve really soured on PP over the last several seasons because of this. It seems to me sometimes he plays when he wants to play which makes him look like a diva. It’s like he’s trying to avoid injury because “he arrived”. Those aspects of his game really stood out on punt returns & tackling, where he repeatedly showed lack of interest for whatever his reasons.

I like guys who play hard each & every play. Until he changes that part of his game for the whole season again, I will always be a skeptic of his. He did play well the last couple of games & I want to see it consistently til he even sniffs the guys class you mentioned.

I expect more effort from a supposed star

On PFT this morning they talked about active players who are HOFers.

Sherman was the only cert. Chris Harris Jr got more play than P2.

Pat was an afterthought tacked on at the end and the thought was his PED ban severely hurt his chances.

The so-called "big tease", going into last season, was putting together a H of F career. He can add to the résumé with a solid bounce back year.

I agree. No one is tougher on P2 than us Cardinal fans. I expect a bounce back season. I would definitely extend him before the season. He'll be too expensive afterwards.

Aeneas was no doubt the best CB in Cardinal history. 2nd place is a battle between PP & Roger Wehrli.
This. And I'm fine with PP at #2 based on recency bias and the overall insanity of NFL offenses since 2000.
