what was it? was it...

1. poor workout times?
2. Off field issues? Graves said he was a great football player and stopped there.
3. fact that he got tons of sacks in the Pac 10 did not mean as much this season? Rein long sydrome...
4. He was shut down by the one really good tackle he played (harris from stanford)?
5. ASU put up so many points on offense that other teams had to pass the entire game...opportunity for sacks?
6. Mean jo greene worked him out at the last pro workout..did they see something they did not like?

Personally, I think ASU had a pretty poor dline and he was double teamed quite a bit...but it appears the cardinals were not going to take him...So much for bidwill just wanting to sell tickets..people would be crowing about a great draft if we would have taken suggs at #6...just trying to figure out why the cardinals did not take him at #6..from what I have read he had plenty of talent to be taken at #6..

I think so too. The Cards obviously didn't want Suggs, Trufant, Jimmy Kennedy, or Williams. I think they wanted to add Bryant Johnson and Jerome McDougle, but that plan backfired so they took their next best end Calvin Pace.

Who knows...maybe Pace was above McDougle.

Dammit, Krang. You keep talking like that and you're going to convince me this was not such a bad draft.
If that happens, boy am I gonna feel silly for the stuff I was saying earlier today...

Krang..I listened to graves and mac on the radio (not sure if you heard it)..and it appears they did want mcdougle..but they may have had mcdougle, suggs and pace on a comparable rating...I think Philly knew we wanted him and jumped ahead..and we thought KC traded back to take pace..

bob kemp pointed out that pace put up much better #'s than mcdougle..but pace should have because he was on a weak defense and mcdougle was part of a rotation on the miami dline..

Actually...kc may have targeted pace for all we know...maybe they switched to rb after we took pace (kind of screwed us over on tj - now they do not need him). Pace mentioned that he thought philly would take him in the 1st round..but they traded up for mcdougle..

I was chomping at the bit for us to draft suggs...but if we would have drafted him..somewhere in the back of my mind I would have worrried that he is going to be a bust..such is the life of a football fan on draft day...I still want suggs..time will tell..I know nothing about pace.

Yep. That was on of my favorite albums. "502", "Anarchy in the U.K.", etc.

I kind of had a hunch all along that Cards would not draft Suggs.

I saw Dave Mustaine at the Cards/Raiders game last year. He was headed to a suite. I love Megadeth. I saw their last ever show at the Web Theatre. They filmed it for a DVD and I have that too.

That's cool. I'd heard Dave Mustaine lives here in the Valley.
I liked everything by them except for the "Risk" CD. I'm still not too sure about that one.

I'm starting to think that too.

Graves basically said that, but what would you expect him to say.

I missed him say that specifically...but we knew when we traded mcdougle and suggs could be gone..there were too many teams who needed defensive ends between #6 and #17...teams like ..chicago..new england..kc...we had to know (at least 50 - 50 chance) that mcdougle would be gone...

that is the bottom line

Where the Cards had them rated. I think that Graves (or Mac) indicated that McDougal was rated higher, and they took the next best on their list.

The Cards did not have an "impressive" draft today IMO. But, in three years, it might look better.

Let's face it. If Pace were a 3rd round draft pick, but became a monster of a defensive end, we would all be ecstatic. Maybe the Cards saw this kind of potential in the kid.

Had Larry Allen been a top 5 pick, the Cowboys (or whomever would have drafted him instead of the second round) would have been ridiculed, but he would have ended up being worth it.

Bottom line: We won't know for some time whether Pace is a bust or not .

I am generally not a Cardinals' apoligist, but IMO, after the first 5 picks, there were no "franchise" prospects with no question marks. Unfortunately, we will have to wait and see. But, no matter who they drafted, we would have to do the same. It just happens that the draft was not a boost to the confidence of many of us Cardinals' fans.

I met him at a Coyotes game. I was walking and bumped right into him. I'm all hey your Dave Mustaine and he goes yup.

I love those guys.

I posted before that I really felt Joe Greene didn't like the times in Suggs first 10 yards in the 40 yard dash in an interview I seen after his workout. It's going to be interesting in the coming days to see if Greene or Graves or Mac make any kind of revealing comments about Suggs after the draft is over.

I initially thought that we were targeting McDougle and got outmaneuvered by Philly, but now, I'm not so sure.

"McDougle originally signed on to play for Pittsburgh State but was unhappy with his lack of playing time as a freshman. He jumped to Hinds Junior College in Mississippi."

Also, per PFW, "Doesn't have great size or work habits."

So McDougle quit on his team after not getting the playing time he wanted, and has poor work habits. Doesn't sound like the type of player we have been bringing in the last couple years.

However, the War room has this to say, "Coaches have praised his work ethic and his desire to improve, and at 23, they love McDougle's maturity."

So that kinda blows that theory.

This is what Redskins offensive lineman Jon Jansen had to say about passing on him.

On Terrell Suggs: One reason they may have passed on Suggs maybe because of the level of competition that he faced in college. Sure he was able to get 24 sacks but the tackles he faced weren't very good. Suggs did a great job of exploiting those tackles, but he will face an entirely different level of competition in the NFL. That may have put enough of a doubt in the Cardinals' minds that they felt it wasn't a good pick.

I didn't agree with the way the Cardinals handled the trade, but I wasn't high on Suggs either because I didn't think you could afford a high pick for someone who might only be a 3rd down pass rushing specialist in the NFL. I find it interesting that the Ravens plan on having Suggs lose weight to go back down to 240 and play him at linebacker. I think Suggs will be a good blitzing LB at that size, but I'm still not convinced he'll make a good linebacker on first and 2nd down and be a complete player which I think is what you have to draft for that high in the draft. It will be interesting to see how that pans out.
