Cardinals' Michael Floyd leaves practice with apparent hand injury

http://www.thescore.com/news/805209

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Michael Floyd left Wednesday's practice with an apparent left hand injury, according to Kyle Odegard of the team's official website.

Floyd recorded 47 catches for 841 yards and a career-high six touchdowns last season, and was expected to remain as a core component of the Cardinals' passing offense.

The initial prognosis could be bleak, with Floyd leaving the field as a trainer held his arm and hand, according to Kent Somers of The Arizona Republic.

Floyd was selected 13th overall by the Cardinals in the 2012 NFL Draft. The Notre Dame product led the club in receiving yards, while eight-time Pro Bowler Larry Fitzgerald topped the team's charts with 63 receptions.

A physical receiver who is best utilized against smaller cornerbacks, Floyd's injury could prove to be costly for a team with an erratic passing game.

How quickly a strength becomes a question mark!

Hoping for the best.. but could mean big opportunities for the Browns & JJ depending on severity.

I'm worried but I'm less worried now that it's just his hand.

If it's broken, he would miss about a month. So, just in time for the regular season opener, hopefully.

Another offensive lineman down. G John Fullington. Working on his left leg, headed off on a cart. #CardsCamp

#AZCardinals WR Michael Floyd broke three fingers on his left hand, source said. He’s out six weeks, likely to miss start of the season.

Injuries don’t make Arians flinch

- The Cardinals still have 75 or so players able to practice today, so with 13 players now sitting out, Bruce Arians isn’t worried about making practice go.

- Now, it’s hard to tell with a hamstring, and the Cardinals now have six of those guys, including running back Marion Grice, who joins Andre Ellington and David Johnson at that position with hamstring issues.

- There was good news on tackle D.J. Humphries, who hyperextended his knee apparently after tripping on the turf of the lower field. He could be out up to a week, Arians said, but it might only be a couple of days. The offensive line lost three players yesterday, with tackle Rob Crisp (knee) and Earl Watford (ankle) also going down.

Why not start this way?? We had a good run last year with the practice squad playing!

Not good, but at least its not a major knee injury and he should not miss many games. Maybe one or two.

He'll be ok, it wasn't a knee or anything.

As others have said, 6 weeks is just about when the season opens.

Just gives us more opportunity to see what the other guys can do in preseason.

RT @kentsomers: per NFL source, Floyd’s injury might not be as severe as team first thought. Might miss 3-5 weeks. It’s early, so no one can say for sure

Just heard from ESPN that the fingers were dislocated not broken and he will be out 3 to 4 weeks.

From the Fantasy Football Forum yesterday. I already believe that Floyd will be overtaken by Brown. Even if it went into the regular season, Brown or Fitz would be a bigger loss

I picked John Brown. Brown had 103 targets in his first year. The player that Brown reminds me the most of is TY Hilton. Hilton had similar targets his first year in the same offense - 91.

In his second year, Hilton exploded to 138 targets (and 130 last year).

I believe a similar increase will happen with Brown and we will see him in the 130 targets this year.

With better QB play we can reasonably expect a jump in his 46% catch rate on those targets. I would say 60% is really reachable.

Combine that and just using his YPC last year and you get a projection of 78 catches for 1131 and about 7 TDs.

Now even if I am off by 10% I still believe that will outperform Fitz or Floyd.

To be fair, Hilton's targets went up because Reggie Wayne went down with a severe knee injury 7 games into the season and Darrious Heyward-Bay was the next man up.

I think that it would've been better to lose Fitz than Michael Floyd.

Absolutely and I took that into account. This is why I did a smaller jump (27 targets instead of 47 targets) and then even accounted for potentially over estimating by 3-4 targets

Brown actually tied with Fitz for first in targets despite being a rookie. It's easy to see 27 more targets when we hopefully aren't dipping into our 3rd string QB

We shouldn't miss a beat. Floyd doesn't use his fingers that much.
