Which matchup would you like to see in the NFC Championship?
Friday, Day 11 of the Cardinals coaching search produced one interview and a multitude of rumors, a handful of whispers and a false report or two.
This much is known for sure: The Cardinals conducted a second interview with Ken Whisenhunt, the Steelers offensive coordinator and one of the hottest coaching candidates on the market. If the Cardinals emerged from Friday's interview with a firm plan for proceeding, no one is talking about it.
Whisenhunt is the second candidate from the team's short list to interview a second time. Former Packers coach Mike Sherman, now the Texans assistant head coach, interviewed again Thursday.
FoxSports.com reported that the Cardinals were prepared to offer the job to Sherman but backed away when he asked for a salary of $4 million a year. Two sources close to the search, however, said the report was false and that financial terms of a deal were never discussed.
If the Cardinals want Sherman, they might have competition. The Steelers are interested in talking to him, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, about their vacant position, but no interview has been scheduled.
There was also a false report Friday that Georgia Tech coach Chan Gailey was scheduled to interview with the Cardinals today. Gailey is interviewing with the Steelers today and is not under consideration by the Cardinals.
The Cardinals started their search by interviewing eight candidates in eight days, and they trimmed that list this week. Beyond Whisenhunt and Sherman, the team has not revealed the identity of other candidates, assuming there are others.
Club officials are believed to still have interest in Chargers offensive coordinator Cam Cameron and Titans offensive coordinator Norm Chow.
The Cardinals can't interview Cameron again until the Chargers are out of the playoffs. That could happen as soon as Sunday when the Chargers play the Patriots. Or it might not come until after the Feb. 4 Super Bowl.
The Cardinals are taking their time in this search, and it's doubtful they will hire anyone before Tuesday.
