At what?

Run blocking ? I beg to differ.

Terrell Smith can catch where Kreider cannot.

I'd rather have a young guy but Kreider will do for now. He will help the running game that is for sure.
I'm biased. I've been a Terrelle Smith fan since he was on the Saints.

Why? He likely wont even be on the field for 80% or more of the run plays. Much llike T. Smith wasnt last year and the year before.

Maybe that's why we were 32nd in the league in rushing last year. Maybe Coach Whis is tired of the delayed draw handoff and pray for surprise rushing game. Maybe we're starting to commit more to the run.

Cardinals Signs FB

Dan Kreider Profile

The Arizona Cardinals signed FB Dan Kreider to a one-year deal on Thursday, the team announced.

Kreider (5-11, 255) joins the Cardinals after spending last season with the St. Louis Rams where he appeared in 11 games (four starts) before being released on November 26. A 10-year NFL veteran, Kreider spent his first eight seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers after originally entering the NFL in 2000 as an undrafted rookie free agent out of New Hampshire.

With the Steelers, Kreider appeared in 113 games (66 starts) and had 144 rushing yards on 32 attempts to go along with 60 receptions for 469 yards. He also appeared in 10 postseason contests (eight starts) with the Steelers including starting in Pittsburgh’s Super Bowl XL victory against the Seattle Seahawks.

Gonna miss I-45. Oh well, we get a good blocking FB and I-45 will most likely sign with the Chiefs in the next couple days.

Why do people think he is a good blocking FB anymore, let alone better then Smith? Its an honest question.

Does anyone actually remember anything he did last year, are we going purely on the "old school FB" label he has, or becuase he worked for Pitt 2 years ago (and benched for a different FB), or because he played in 11 games before being released mid season with the Rams (who were looking again for a FB this offseason).

We have a FB who can catch in Castille. The signing is for lead blocking and lead blocking only.

He was not resigned by PItt after having a knee injury and the team having a player in Carey Davis who made about half what Kreider did. I read two reports about the Rams last year 1) The Rams were insane (don't forget they also cut a starting CB, only to resign him after Haslett took over for Linnehan) and 2) He missed some blocks in pass protection that cost him. The second one I take with a grain of salt because EVERYONE missed assignments on that team last year. In addition, Arizona doesn't use a FB in most passing downs. The guy is brought in to be a run blocking hammer, that's it. Nothing more. Yes, Smith gave us a little extra in the passing game, but Castille does as well. It should be for the vet min, which being a 10 year vet means it only costs 450K against the cap if I remember correctly.

Sorry cant buy that at all. So becuase everyone else missed assignments his assignment are all of a sudden any less? A missed assignment is a missed assignment, and because others around him stunk doesnt make his stink smell any better, it just adds to the pungency.

It does when you have 3 free runners to the QB and you have to "pick the right one" because he is the last line of defense in the backfield. But the other point to support that was just after. AZ isn't signing him to play 50 plays a game and pass block. He is here to improve short yardage and obvious run downs. We don't need him to pass block because we tend to swap the FB out on thiose downs.

I'd be surprised if he signed for a more than half of what we signed T.Smith to.

Ho Hum signing....

This quote is the exact reason why he is on the team. When you only play during 20% of the downs you make them as cheap as possible.

Now move the savings on to Dansby.

Smith is a good guy, but he is barely over average for his position, if that. Kreider is an upgrade in run blocking for sure. And he blocked for several different kinds of backs in Pittsburgh. Seemed at times like Smith could only block for Edge.

Unless Im mistaken when Smith was signed he had been to a PB as a FB and been considered a very good blocking FB. I dont see where it will make much difference.

Only block for Edge? Smith delivered perhaps the most important block of the season on THE DRIVE in the NFC Championship Game 4th and 1 that sprang TH for the first down.

Give credit where credit is due.

Kreider can play STs...Smith couldn't. There's the story.

I do believe I said "at times" he looked like he could only block for edge. He played his ass of in the playoffs, just like a lot of people did. Doesn't change the fact the running game suffered all year long.

I really like Terrelle Smith as a person, but I thought his blocking was a little suspect. As long as Kreider's an upgrade in that facet of his game, I'm good with the signing.
I have to disagree. T.Smith was an outstanding blocker.

I hope this doesn't signal the demise of Smith as a Cardinal, but I'm largely unmoved either way.

I really dont think this eliminates the chance of a T Smith return. This guy couldn't stay employed for the Rams last year. Smith is a beast and easily one of the most underrated players on this team IMO.

It's obvious they've been looking for a replacement for Smith. I really wasn't to keen on Smiths blocking this year so this isn't a big deal to me.

Kreider plays special teams and is cheaper. I think that tells the whole story.

I also know that when Smith signed here as a free agent for a pretty good amount of money the coaches were not very happy with him that first year because he came to camp out of shape. If you're a marginal player at a marginal position that is not a way to endear yourself to the coaches.

I loved the way Smith put Peppers on his a$$ in the playoff game. That was a thing of beauty.
