Boldin gets contract extension

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=pasquarelli_len&id=2120965

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports Arizona Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin has reached agreement on a four-year contract extension with the team. Under the original contract, Boldin had two more seasons remaining, at base salaries of $380,000 and $450,000, the NFL minimums. The extension adds four seasons, through 2010, thus creating a six-year contract with a total value of $23.5 million. Significant is that Boldin will earn a total of $13.25 million in bonuses and salaries for 2005-2006. In the first three seasons of the new deal, Boldin will earn $15.25 million. Boldin will receive a $5 million signing bonus and then an additional "second-tier" option bonus of $5 million next spring. The base salaries are $1.5 million (2005), $1.75 million (2006), $2 million (2007), $2.5 million (2008), $2.75 million (2009) and $3 million (2010).

Good to have him signed, but only a four year contract may come back to haunt the Cards if they right about his being the answer.

No matter what if he is the answer he would want a new contract by year 4 anyways. Not a big deal.

I think most second round picks get a four year deal. That's what Boldin had.

Isn't there a limit on how far past the expiration of the current CBA a contract can extend? That could be the reason it was only 4 years. Some NFL guy with the Cowboys had mentioned that limit was one of the reasons the signings were so late this season. But I don't know for sure if it's correct.
