Again two years at $10M per year sounds like what it should be. If he doesn't take that I start to believe that FA was his and his agents intention all along. :mulli:

The way I look at it is do we really want a 38yr old quarterback starting for us next year. Especially with a 14 million dollar price tag. To me we could use that $ elsewhere like on defense. Remember Kurt barely beat out Matt last year.

The QB competition pales in comparison with the age issue. Few QBs in NFL history have been effective past age 38. The issue will be guaranteed money because I doubt Warner plays in 2010.

If its not guaranteed they can sign him to a 25 year $100 million dollar contract for all I care. Signing bonus and the 2009 salary number are all that will have a significant impact on the Cards ability to sign other players.

Matt Cassell doesn’t belong in the conversation. He is getting a franchise tag and a completely different set of circumstances to a long term deal for Warner. Second Matt got the exclusive franchise tag which means top 3 QB salaries instead of the top 5 QB salaries that come with the non-exclusive tag.

Now for the fallacy of the logic of he should get paid like a top 5 QB. Franchise tag tender can not be used as a deciding factor. First, it is only a snap shot in time of what a QB made that year, it is not what the QB makes on average over the life of their deal. For example you can have a QB at the end of their contract where it was backloaded thus skewing the franchise tag total. Second, players who get huge salaries to begin their career skew the number. For example, when Rodgers got his extension in 2008 the Packers had a ton of cap space still left to use, so instead of making his signing bonus a bonus that gets pro rated over the life of the deal they used their remaining cap space and made that signing bonus his base salary saving cap space in all future years which ment Rodgers for the purposes of calculating the franchise had a whopping 24 mill salary to be used for the tag top 5 calculations. Thus skewing it heavily. Just to show how heavily his salary skewed the tag the next highest salary was Manning at 11.5. So you can see the fallacy in using the franchise tag totals as a barometer for a deal for Warner, if Warner is looking for top 5 money. And even so top 5 money franchise tag is only 11.8 not the top 3 exclusive tag that Cassell got of 14.6.

If Warner wants top 5 money it needs to be in terms of total contract values of the top 5 QB contracts, not a one year snap shot. Which as it turns out is between 10 and 11 mill.

Peyton Manning 7yrs/$99.2 million $14.17 million avg
Carson Palmer 9 yrs/$118.75 million $13.19 million avg
Roethlisberger 8 yrs/$102 million $12.75 million avg
Tony Romo 6 yrs/$67.4 million $11.23 million avg
Aaron Rodgers 6yrs/$65 million $10.83 million avg
Tom Brady 6yrs/$60 million $10 million avg
Drew Brees 6 yrs/$60 million $10 million avg
Donovan McNabb 12 yrs/$115 million $9.6 million avg

The Cardinals offer is very comparable to these contracts. He should sign the deal.

One thing that doesn't sound right is "Warner wants $14-16M." That's what his agent wants. I think that the Cardinals can get a more reasonable deal in the $10M range with added incentives, especially if they ask Warner to help them create enough cap space to strengthen the team for Super Bowl runs over the next two years.

I thought Warner would sign with $8M and over with this long time ago...He is not young and he could stay here where his wish is. Maybe Rod G should play a hard ball.

SIMPLE FACT, Warner was a top-5 QB last year and deserves the amount he is asking for. I think the Cardinals know that and Warner and his agent know this. It is what it is, and without Warner this team would have never gotten as far as they did. I still believe Leinart is far from a bust but dang...look what Warner did. I think the Cardinals are offering more money because Warner helps them win, he proved it clear and simple and there are a lot teams which would offer the same if he did for them what he did for the Cardinals this year.

and these are two sides trying to reach a deal, so of course the Cardinals will start with a low offer and Warner with a really high offer and they will meet in the middle or why even have contract discussions or have an agent ;)

Hey I want Warner back but $12 million with 2-million of it incentivized is more than generous. $12.1 million and we can with Kurt a happy retirement and start the Matt Leinart era in 2009.

ok, maybe I'm a little passionate about this one guys and I understand your age concerns and all but it would not be a stretch to say Warner last year had the greatest season of any Cardinal QB in team history...better than Lomax or Hart. He is not asking for possible Fitz money like Boldin... and Warner earns that kind of pay at his position.

and by me saying possible Fitz money like Boldin, I mean for his positon compared to other QBs in the league and what he accomplished for the team. If and only if Boldin would be asking for Fitz money it would not make sense with a young player like Fitz and his playoff comparison to Boldin...but Leinart is still a little of a question mark and Warner is proven and you have to trust his last season of play in this system. Heck, if they did the MVP voting correctly and would not cast it so soon...Warner very well could have been the League MVP

Well put, both of you!
I don't see why he doesn't sign this, unless he wants multiple year instead of the money.:grabs:
