Holy cow, that is lunacy!

Quick, Suns, offer to double Nash's contract before he changes his mind!

One year ago, Cardinal was a nobody and just begging for a job in the NBA. Today he is worth 39M. WOW

WOW! Nash really is starting to look like a bargain at this point.

If he was taller than 6'10", I'm willing to bet he would get a contract for 2x as much. Teams are that desperate for BIG men.

Why couldn't I be 6 inches taller, so I could get a nice contract in the NBA for just being tall? ;)

The Logo is no dummy.

I'm just glad Cardinal didn't wind up with Chicago. He'd probably be playing 40 mpg and killing our draft pick by the end of next season. :D

I agree, what is going on with these free agents...these guys are subpar at best...Makes our Nash deal look fantastic, most analysts are stating we got a good deal considering what all the sub par players are signing for...what's next?

Could the real reason we pounced on Nash so early be that they had a feeling the free agent market was going to go haywire? I'm not so sure, but they said they had some tricks up their sleeves.

The agents are just doing their jobs. Getting the best money for their clients. I fault the owners. Sooner or later fans are going to stop going to the games - cost is just getting too high. $6.5M per year for Cardinal!! Who pays for it? The fans!!

It's a theory.
Of course the other side is the Suns set the market by offering Nash so much.

Really I think the Suns just targeted Nash as the guy they wanted and just figured what it would take to out bid Mark Cuban.

Actually, fans pulling the "I pay your salary" line is BS. The league gets tons more money from the fans that watch games on TV than they do from the fans that go to games.

Not to mention a lot of NBA teams are in the black/red year after year.

Couldn't agree more.

I wouldn't say the suns set the market, but they were to first person to let loose on a big deal. GMs don't want to be the first people paying big money, and since the first FA signed got a big contract, everyone else was able to point to his deal as a reference.

Wow, that's a lot of money for Cardinal. Does anyone else think that something else must be in the works for Memphis? That's a lot of money to pay to a guy who will struggle to get time on a team 10 deep. Maybe there is a trade in the works to move some players.

Cardinal had a great year in GS. However, GS is totally committed to DunLeavy at SF and top managment insisted that Musselman play him ahead of Cardinal. Take away the contract issues and he would have been the starter for the rest of the season.

Why? Because he is one of the best outside shooters in the NBA and is still willing to do the dirty work on the inside.

If Clippers match Richardson's contract - would anyone here be interested in Stromile Swift? Memphis signed Cardinal - would Swift be available?

you might be available for contract similar to Cardinal's (maybe a little more). We all might be interested in him, but I'm not sure the Phoenix Suns would be. Swift is supposed to be incredibly lazy. He would be a nice backup power forward and occasional small ball center though.

I would be very interested in Swift if Q stays in LA. Good idea.

Sorry about adding the s by mistake. Anyways, the Cardinals would never fetch 39M. No way!

The Nash signing and the Cardinal signing don't really have much to do with each other.

The FA market is split into two parts--FAs who get the MLE or less, and FAs who get more than the MLE. For a big FA like Nash, it really comes down to a few teams bidding against each other (Phoenix and Dallas in Nash's case). Teams that are under the cap aren't worried as much about overall economic indicators.

Free agents signing for the MLE or less are being courted by teams that are already over the cap. For those teams, one of the main factors is how much they can afford to spend and still make money.

Swift will probably be gone within the next week.

Cardinal got paid wayyy to much, everybody is overspending this offseason. How the hell does Brian Cardinal get that that kind of money? I know he works his ass off and everything, but please!

I agree F-Dog, the Suns making that offer to Nash was more of a basketball decision than anything. The numbers they offered were out of necessity not out of some desire to beat the FA market. They were out of the necessity to beat teams on the court next season.
