Really? Isn't this exactly what he did behind Carson Palmer for two years, and then still had to go through a QB competition with Matt Cassell? Matt Leinart is nothing if not a team player. He stood idly on the sidelines at USC when he could have tranferred to compete for a starting job.

I'm not sure that his position here is that different than his position at Southern Cal his freshman year.

Yep in fact not only did Leinart do that, he signed at USC KNOWING they had Palmer, and Cassell. I forget the timeline but I think Cassell was a year ahead of Leinart and he redshirted his freshman year too. So when Leinart signed he had Palmer(heavily touted) and a highly touted freshman recruit(cassell) redshirting. Leinart even signed early so he didn't know who else USC might sign. He didn't seem at all concerned then.

I'm honestly stating this not from a position of knowledge, but from a position of educated supposition. From all I've read on various forums, Patriots fans aren't batting even an eyelash at the loss of this guy. Yes, it was a good move to bring in another RT. Is this guy going to help us? Unless he's Yusef Scott, yes, he'll definitely help.

Is he a "solid player and a legitimate starter at RT" as you put? Probably not. You don't get players like that in a late August trade for a 7th round draft pick. You get almost-cut players.

I agree. I think you guys are over-valuing Gorin. He's your prototypical backup T at best. We'll see how he plays here, but by no means is the answer to our problems at RT. Two mediocre RT's don't make a solid RT.

You lost me at hello. I honestly didn't even read the rest of your post after this line.

I was stating this from first-hand knowledge...I live five minutes from Gilette Stadium in Foxboro, MA...I watch all the Patriots games and Brandon Gorin has been a solid starter for them when others like Tom Ashworth and Nick Kaczur got hurt.

The Patriots are the deepest team in football (except at WR)...they are masters at the draft...and seem to have 9-10 draft picks every year, which is why they have the luxury of adding offensive linemen in every draft...

This past year they got a 5th round steal in T Ryan O'Callaghan...last year they drafted and started Nick Kaczur (3rd round)...in 11 games...

Their offensive line coach, Dante Scarnecchia, is one of the best in the business...he's also the Asst. Head Coach to Bellichick...

Gorin has been very well coached...and played good football in his starts.

I stand behind my statement...

Gorin is an upgrade over Ross and Bridges...because he always could run block and in recent years has developed into a sound pass protector, thanks to good coaching and dedication.

Ross is a liability in pass protection and Bridges is a liability in the running game.

I'm happy we have Gorin. He can push Ross and keep Bridges down the depth chart. I don't want Bridges starting for Ross.

If nothing else, we now have Gorin to back up Leonard Davis instead of Wakefield. That in itself is a huge upgrade.

First of all, congratulations to the Cardinals for acquiring T Brandon Gorin from the Patriots. Gorin is a solid player and a legitimate starter at RT.

This trade solidifies three of the five offensive line positions...LT (Leonard Davis), RG (Milford Brown) and RT (Brandon Gorin).

I just don't see the Patriots getting rid of a legitimate starter at RT with cap numbers as low as Gorin has. I'm happy we got a guy with some starting experience but I don't expect Gorin to be anything but a backup at best.

Some of you are saying that Gorin is not starting material. Yet, he started 10 games (played in 14) in 2004; as I recall that Patriots won the
Super Bowl that year; and started 8 games (played in 11) in 2005 for the Patriots.

Now I'll be the first to agree that the guy is not headed to the HOF, but to think that he doesn't upgrade the Cardinals at the OT position, that's just ridiculous.

Anthony Clement has started 75 games in his career. Yet he is nothing more than a backup on the Jets and his only starts for the 49ers last year were due to injuries. Just because a player has starts doesn't mean they are starting material.

I do think Gorin upgrades our OL, but that isn't saying much.

Good depth at T, but little depth at G made him expendable. Ryan O'Callaghan has surpassed Gorin on the depth chart, so I think trading Gorin was a simple matter of adding one more back-up G to the 53 man roster at the expence of a back-up T.

Good response, MCD. But at this point (Bridges and Wakefield, with Ross injured) I seriously think Clement would be an upgrade at RT!!!

That is an absolutely ludicrous comparison. A swinging gate on an horrfic o-line vs. a solid component of a championship calber o-line? He may not be a probowl player, but if he plays as well as he did with the Pats then he should be an excellent pick-up. He could supplant Ross at RT but I think that with the addition of Brown at RG and Loney coaching, this year's Ross might be head and shoulders above last year's version. This line is beginning to take shape.
