Do the Cards put a spy on Vick and if so who?

Don DeBaca and Dale Hallestrae were briefly discussing this on the radio and I thought it was an interesting subject.

DD said he thought the Cards would try Darling as a spy to which Dale laughed...and so did I. My initial reaction to question was to have Wilson spy and when his name was brought up by DH it was questioned (althought not broken down) how having Wilson spy him would actually hamper the defense.

So if the Cards should spy Vick, who should do it?

hayes or dansby

Is Hayes fast enough? Is Dansby? Is Dansby mentally far enough into the defense to start and play essentially the entire game? DD and DH mentioned they though the bst alternative would have been Ray Thompson but he is doubtful for this week.

I know hayes is fast enough to be a spy, and Dansby is fast... Dansby should do alright.

Really though who is "fast" enough to cover Vick?

Having Wilson spy might hurt the passing game, but if he is able to contain Vick, and put a few good licks on him, then we will have more of a chance to win.

If we make him pass the ball, then it helps us big time.

I dont think a spy necessarly needs to be REALLY fast.

Hayes speed would be enough as all they would really need to do is keep Vick in the pocket by covering and plugging any open running lanes.

I think that new linebacker from Chicago would be excellent spy. He ran a 4.4 in the combines. He is not really tall but that speed would be an excellent spy on Vick. He is pretty dam strong to, I don't know what that would have to do being a spy.

Both Hayes and Dansby are fast.......I wish people took the time to understand the personnel on this team and their respective strengths and weaknesses.......it sure would save a lot of bandwidth!

No they shouldnt have a spy on him at all.

What they should do is blitz him repeatedly from the left side and take away his throwing lanes. Make sure who is ever playing RDE does not get fooled and try to collapse the pocket. They need to stay at home and wait for Vick to be forced back over his way.

If you allow him to roll left he will eat you alive all day either running or passing.

I think you want the fastest team you can have out there....at every position.... of course we need to make sure we can hold our own against TJ Duckett.... he's a bruiser

Frankly, I don't think you spy him at all. I think you keep him in the pocket, play various mixtures of zones behind him and let him give you three picks.

Great athlete, but not a great QB -- if you make him throw. Arm strength means nada. He's not in a system suited to him. Make him hold it and make decisions. That's what the Niners did and they damned near caught up and beat him.

Wilson

Adrian Wilson is the one player that has a chance containing him. I would play him at the line the whole game almost like a LB and let Vick beat us with his arm.

I know I'm getting into this thread a little late, but did you see who the Eagles spied Culpepper with? Jevon Kearse.

I'd spy Vick with Bertrand Berry. If Berry's pass rushing, he'll either open escape lanes for Vick by getting driven up-field or get overpowered by LT Kevin Shaffer or his skills will be wasted playing containment. Calvin Pace should be strong enough to support the pocket playing a 3-4-type DE. Kyle Vanden Bosch only plays containment End on the other side, or you can use Dockett as a two-gap DE bringing pressure from Vick's blind side. Let Berry use his speed to keep an eye on Vick. If he's playing every down with containment, we're wasting our time.

As I said on another thread, though, it's not going to matter who's spying him if the defensive tackles can't push (not penetrate, mind you: push) the interior of the offensive line into Vick's face. Vick doesn't often escape to the outside, he runs up the middle, which is why he's so hard to contain. Dockett can't worry about penetrating. He has to worry about holding his ground, and Russell Davis can't think about getting pushed around.

Is Dansby mentally far enough into the defense to start and play essentially the entire game?
How intelligent does a player have to be to perform the role of spy?

I'd imagine it would go something like: "Hey Karlos. See that dude over there #7? Yeah, the guy who takes the snaps for the other team - the ones in the different uniforms. Yeah, that dude. Well here's the deal: "Where ever he goes, you go. Keep your hands up to mess up his throwing lanes and never, never, never let him get by you.

Remember: "#7: Ba-a-d. The guys in our uniforms: G-o-o-d! Now go get 'em!"

He has to be smart enough to know what to do when the Falcons aren't passing because then he will have to play a typical LB position. My assumption is he is not starting because he has not been able to effectively pick up the defense because there is no other logical reason I can think of.

hey guys,

i think you guys are too concerned with a "spy" for vick there's only been a couple spies that have worked against him, and that's been derrick brooks. the thing that has worked the best against vick is the "mush rush" the mush rush does 2 things it closes running lanes and passing lanes. its good stuff aslong as your ends contain, only problem with the mush rush is in defending the run then you're going to get gashed for 6 yards a pop with the zone blocking scheme the falcons have.

We'll have to throw different looks at this cat. I really feel we shouldn't get so caught up in one aspect of playing Vick. We still have to worry about Price, Crumpler, etc. I'd like to see a little blitzing, and of course spying should be employed. I know DG and the staff have to be losing sleep over scheming for the Falcons. Man, I'm glad it's not me. Guess that's why they pay em' the big bucks.
