No, that's incorrect. What you described is the
average or
mean. The
median value is the one ranked in the middle, i.e. half the salaries are higher, and half are lower.
If there are a few very high salaries, they can skew the average higher, while the median remains the same. E.g.:
1, 2, 3, 4, 5: mean = 3, median = 3.
1, 2, 3, 9, 10: mean = 5, median = 3.
But i think the original poster was interested less in the definition of the word median, and more in the practical upshot of the Cardinals being ranked higher or lower in median salary - a topic on which joeshmo has already weighed in.
