Good God, The median is the average of all salaries divided by total number of team players.
I know what the word means, I want to know what being at the bottom of the league in median salary means. I saw no real correlation between team spending, median salary and winning so I wonder what it might generally point to if a team is high or low on the list.

Median doesnt mean anything. Lots of things can make you have more players or less players such as how many do you have on the IR list, because those guys are under contract and count towards your total roster, There is other things but you get the point. It isnt a black or white comparison, when comparing where the teams are at to each other.

Anyways Somers altest blog said they were working well into the night and both sides expect a "resolution" today. Boy, I hope so becuase I am tired of talking or thinking about it. Just get something done today so we can move on, because the Cards FO havent shown the ability to work on more then one big deal at a time.

Median is the mid-range point of all the salaries whereas average is the accumulation of all the salaries divided by the number of teams. There is a difference because median is not an average.

Please just get it done. Then start working on the "core" and add a few parts. Once he signs it will be interesting to see what follows. Lots of fodder for this board, I imagine.

No, that's incorrect. What you described is the average or mean. The median value is the one ranked in the middle, i.e. half the salaries are higher, and half are lower.

If there are a few very high salaries, they can skew the average higher, while the median remains the same. E.g.:

1, 2, 3, 4, 5: mean = 3, median = 3.
1, 2, 3, 9, 10: mean = 5, median = 3.

But i think the original poster was interested less in the definition of the word median, and more in the practical upshot of the Cardinals being ranked higher or lower in median salary - a topic on which joeshmo has already weighed in.

EDIT: Oops, Mainstreet beat me to it!
