Michael Bidwill confirms they will use the tag:

"We're not going to mess around with that," Bidwill said, referring to the possibility of not retaining Jones, per the team's website. "He's a great pass rusher, but if we can't agree to terms that work for us, we're just going to franchise him. His people know that."

Fine with me, if golden keeps improving and we from a good olb from the draft this year we could let him walk too after the season. Lots of ifs there though. Either way, if golden can be elite I'd rather keep him, he has shown promise to get there

Yes, a long-term deal is definitely optimal. It may end up seeming like a lot at first (a long-term deal), but by the next season it will seem like a bargain.

The difference is what does he want for guarantees? If he accepts the f-tag he is guaranteed 15+ mil, if he goes long term he could get 20 mil bonus and be guaranteed 40 to 50 mil. That is a big difference for him, if he were to get injured this year he would lose big time accepting the f-tag. So what the real question is what is his risk tolerance?
