Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt revealed after Friday night's preseason game that Ryan Williams "probably" has a torn patellar tendon.

It's a season-ending and potentially career-threatening injury depending on Williams' recovery process. The good news is that Williams is still just 21 years old, and the injury is occurring now as opposed to November. He'll have a better chance to be healthy by the start of 2012 training camp. The bad news is that Williams will need major knee surgery and his rookie season in the NFL will be a washout. Beanie Wells will dominate carries in Arizona this year.

Probably not career threatening. He's 21. Unless it's completely torn off and he has major setbacks in rehab, he'll be back for TC next season

Well that sucks. I looked forward on seeing him play this year.

It is very difficult to come back from. Edwards(I am pretty sure he is the one) who played as a rookie for the Patriots awhile back and ran for like 1000 yards. Tore his in a sand flag football game at the Pro Bowl. He never was the same again.

I tore mine at 35 playing basketball. I didnt feel comfortable to play again till last year. I was 41. It is as bad as the Achilles if not worse.

We are so unlucky. Because WIlliams was a beast. We now have lost a 2nd round pick for atleast this year. And Beanie has no push to be great. I hope he doesn't take it easier knowing he wont be benched.... You need competition in the NFL.

Right...Complacent. Lazy.

You're talking about a guy who played the entire season with a knee injury and infection from surgery. Please enlighten me as to how that is "no push to be great?"

Edwards had a complete blowout, not just the PT...He tore the acl/mcl and some arteries, too.

I did some googling on this.. Edwards injury was actually different and much worse (he tore every single knee ligament and had nerve damage, and almost had to have his leg amputated). The two guys I have found who had this injury are Cadillac Williams (twice) and Correll Buckhalter. Both came back to play, but never realized their potential post-injury. So, I don't think it's a situation where we will never see the kid play, but I think it's an oversimplification to say he'll make a 100% full recovery and next year it will be like it never happened.

For what I read off that link above, if they take care of it right away, he can make a full recovery.

Well, it's a good thing the front office traded THT before the season started and that Beanie doesn't have a history of injuries. Oh, wait. I'm gald the front office has so much foresight. Just like if one of our WR's goes down.

Hard to fault the front office for making that trade. Beanie deserved a shot as the main ball carrier and with Williams and LSH we appeared to have plenty of talent at that position. As for WR, even if it turns out we don't have a true number 2 receiver, we've got decent depth as long as we don't lose Larry. Between Roberts, Doucet, Sampson and Williams (both of them) we're in solid shape.

Yeah, and we had decent depth at RB as long as we didn't lose Beanie or Williams. Whoops! What happens if we lose Larry? Then what?

Outside of Fitz and Kolb, Williams was the player I was most looking forward to seeing this season. Man, I'm bummed about this. At this point, I just hope he can come back healthy next year.

No offense my friend but who didn't? Sometimes I think these guys make lists and then HOPE for injuries just so they can come back here and make that post.

The Cards had 2 starting quality RB's THT and Beanie, and 3 quality backups including a 2nd round pick, that's 5 RB's, the logical thing to do was to trade THT and hope for the best.

Sorry anyone getting on the FO with this hindsight bullcrap is just a hater pure and simple.

There are limits. It makes no sense to pay decent money to 4 RB's, there are too many other positions and too many other needs. It would be nice if you could stay 10 deep at every position so you could prepare for every eventuality but it only works that way on message boards.

This question deserves it's own response. What usually happens when a team loses it's best player. Some unheralded player steps up or you suffer. Nobody keeps a spare superstar at every position just in case of injury.

Man... I hate to say it, but we may never know the absolute fullest of his potential. Major knee injuries are terrible for running backs. Major major bummer.

I think what may be missing in this discussion is that maybe the team, with there cap position, is equiped to offset this setback by signing or trading for another quality back. Had the front office mismanaged the cap we would not have the flexibility. Either way this is a tough blow. He looked to be really good. Sucks bad
