Well, I read that it will mean that the Cards can select their top rated UDFA.

If this happened when the draft was like 30 rounds, this would be sweet!

Comp picks are rigged. Apparently all-pro guard Alen Faneca carries as much weight as the Pat's former nickle Randall Gay, seeing how both resulted in 5th round comp picks. And did the Giants even lose anything to deserve a 3rd? The only good player I can think of is Shockey but he was traded.

The Faneca thing puzzles me too. Maybe there's a rule that the champion can't get more than a 5th, or his contract numbers weren't what we know of it, but it's strange indeed.

The Giants lost Wilson to a monster deal. May not be a great player, but the money thrown at him was big enough for a third apparently.

The loss of "quality" of a player is measured in the number of starts.

How many more starts does Faneca have to make then, the guy started all 16 and made it to the probowl. I'm still wondering what the explanation is on this one.

All i can think about is that the acquired Mew Moore started 4 games, and the lost Haggans started 0, which doesn't make them equal in value, and a little value has be taken off of Faneca to compensate. Which makes me wonder when does a 'start' count? When a player starts or when he plays the majority of the snaps, and could a team cheat a little, starting their second stringer to give him the start, but playing the acquired first stringer from then on?

Gay started 13 games, Faneca started 16 games = same compensation. The number of starts is THE only measuring stick! Pro-Bowl, stats, quality of play is irrelevant!

Not totally true.

As the NFL explains, compensatory picks are awarded to teams that lose more or better compensatory free agents than they acquire. The number of picks a team can receive equals the net loss of compensatory free agents, up to a maximum of four. Compensatory free agents are determined by a secret formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. Not every free agent lost or signed is covered by the formula.

Adam is pretty amazed himself...

I had 26 correct (with almost all of them in the correct order), plus three more off by one round (all of which I said were possible). Two of the ones I missed, I had listed as possibilities if certain players qualified (they did). The Steelers' pick is the only one I really didn't anticipate at all. I can't explain it, but hopefully the Pittsburgh media gets an answer to that question. Faneca played 99 percent of the snaps, made the Pro Bowl and got a huge contract ($7.8 million per season, plus a little more that doesn't count in the equation). I even went back and looked for funny money in his contract and couldn't find any.

And no, being a guard doesn't have anything to do with it.

last year that extra pick would have been ali highsmith possibly, so we'll get a player with a legit shot.

It's not based on the number of starts, it's based on playing time. I show the number of games played and started when I post my projection because that's something people can easily relate to in terms of playing time.

Also, the reason the Steelers got only a fifth-round comp pick for Faneca is now known. There is a rule that says a team can't get higher than a fifth-round comp pick for any player with 10 or more seasons of NFL experience. Nobody knew about it until the NFL told the Steelers why they got only a fifth for Faneca, but I looked back over previous years' comp picks, and the rule has been used several times before -- including once for the Cardinals (they got a fifth-round comp pick after Lomas Brown left).
