The Cardinals kicked off their final game of the preseason Friday night against the Denver Broncos at Sun Devil Stadium. The Cardinals fell 30-21 to the Broncos finishing the 2005 preseason with a 3-1 record.
1st Quarter
The Broncos did not dress their starting line up, so stepping into the starting role for quarterback Jake Plummer was first year player from Colorado State, Brad Van Pelt.
The Cardinals defense struggled to stop Van Pelt and the Broncos offense early in the first quarter. Van Pelt drove his team down the field 44 yards in 10 plays, culminating in a 43 yard field goal by kicker Jason Elam.
The Cardinals offense was able to counter, starting with an 11 yard pass to wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald. Following a 15 yard facemask penalty Warner connected with tight end Adam Bergen for a gain of 20 yards, followed by another Fitzgerald reception for 12 yards. Three plays later Warner found wide receiver Bryant Johnson for a 23 yard touchdown reception, putting the Cardinals up 7-3 over the Broncos.
2nd Quarter
The Bronco offense fired right back at the Cardinals to start the second quarter. Van Pelt connected with wide receiver Charlie Adams on a 10 yard pass to start the quarter. Running back Tatum Bell continued the Broncos momentum, breaking several tackles on a 35 yard gain. Two plays later Van Pelt connected Darius Watts on a 4 yard touchdown reception. Kicker Jason Elam extra points gave the Broncos a 10-7 lead.
Later in the second quarter, Van Pelt and the Broncos offense were driving the field and were forced with a 4th and 2 situation. The Broncos decided to go for it but were unsuccessful when rookie cornerback Eric Green broke up a Van Pelt pass intended for Darius Watts.
On the Broncos next offensive possession Tatum Bell got the Broncos offense rolling with a 19 yard run, followed by a 13 yard reception from Van Pelt two plays later. On the following play Watts caught his second touchdown pass of the game, this time from 22 yards. Elam’s extra point extended the Broncos lead to ten with 2:08 left in the first half.
Back up quarterback Josh McCown replaced Warner early in the second quarter. Warner finished the night 4-7 for 66 yards and had one touchdown. McCown drove the Cardinals offense down the field late in the second quarter. Cardinals running back Marcel Shipp started the drive with a 12 yard run. McCown then hit wide receiver Reggie Newhouse for a 15 yard gain. Later Shipp took a swing pass and broke several tackles and for 24 yards. The Cardinals were unable to put the ball in the endzone but settled for a 26 yard Neil Rackers field goal to close the Broncos lead to 17-10 right before halftime.
3rd Quarter
The Cardinals offense was able to get some momentum at the beginning of the third quarter. Running back James Jackson rushed for 30 yards on three carries as the Cardinals worked their way down the field. Quarterback Josh McCown was unable to connect with rookie wide receiver LeRon McCoy on 3rd and 8, forcing the Cardinals to attempt a field goal. Neil Racker’s 53 yard attempt failed as the Broncos offense took back over.
The Broncos extended their lead to two scores on the next drive. Van Pelt lead the offense down the field 48 yards in 10 plays finding wide receiver Todd Devoe in the endzone, for his third touchdown pass of the night. Devoe’s three yard reception and Elam’s successful extra point put the Broncos up 24-10.
McCown and the offense struggled to produce on their next possession and were forced to punt the ball away. Scott Player sent a 37 yard punt down the 11 yard line. Denver’s Triandos Luke fumbled the punt and Cardinals receiver Reggie Newhouse recovered the ball, The Cardinals offense missed an scoring opportunity when rookie wide receiver Dan Sheldon dropped a McCown pass in the endzone. Kicker Neil Rackers hit a 28 yard field goal to close the Denver lead to 11 with 3:37 left in the quarter.
Broncos quarterback Matt Mauck replaced Van Pelt late in the third quarter and the score remained 24-13 at the end of the third quarter.
4th Quarter
Mauck and the Broncos offense continued to put plays together to start the fourth quarter. Denver drove 79 yards down the field in 16 plays. Mauck was unable to connect with a wide open Devoe in the corner of the endzone on 3rd and 5, forcing the Broncos to settle for a field goal. Jason Elam connected on a 24 yard field goal to extend the Broncos lead to 27-13.
Third string quarterback John Navarre replaced McCwon on the Cardinals next possession. McCown finished the night 10-19 with 103 yards. Navarre could not get the offense going and the Cardinals were forced to punt the ball away again.
The Cardinals defense was able to stop Mauck and the Broncos on their next possession in the red zone. Rookie safety Ernest Shazor tackled Broncos running back Quentin Griffin for a loss of one. The Broncos were faced with a 3rd and 4 situation when cornerback Raymond Walls tackled Mauck for no gain, forcing the Broncos to attempt another field goal. Elam connected on a 23 yard field goal to put the Broncos a head 30-13.
Navarre got in a rhythm late in the fourth quarter starting with a pass to running back Damien Anderson, who fumbled the ball after the catch and was recovered by receiver LeRon McCoy. On the next play Navarre connected with fullback Obafemi Ayanbadejo on a 10 yard pass. Immediately following that play, Navarre hit McCoy for a gain of 12 yards. Two plays later Navarre hit Reggie Newhouse for a 13 yard touchdown reception. The Cardinals opted to go for a two point conversion but fullback Obafemi Ayanbadejo’s attempt failed.
The Cardinals attempted an onside kick but Racker’s kick rolled out of bounds. Denver’s offense took over and ran out the clock to end the game. Denver's victory made them the only team in the league to go unbeaten during the preseason.
