Great, as good as he is if he was a few inches taller he'd be even better.
Wait that's not what you mean by extend?
This type of signing would be a HUGE move in the right direction. This is the way to keep players that are considered cornerstones of the team.
A. You get the player at today's going rate.
B. The player is happy with today's going rate.
C. Nobody else ever gets the chance to woo the player away.
It's obvious to most of us D Wash is a player now and he is only going to gett better. To many times we have left players enter their final year and that is REALLY rolling the dice. If that said player has a pro bowl type year you most certainly are going to be paying him a whole helluva lot more money either eith or without the dreaded tag.
If you extend him and the player suddenly becomes "content" a team can always cut him or maybe even trade him.
And the Cards have also ripped up entry level contracts for guys who clearly out performed their deals.
I may be wrong, but have the Cards done this since the first Adrian Wilson/Darnell Dockett/Anquan Boldin bonanza? How long ago was that? Five years? More? Calais Campbell was given the Franchise tag, Steve Breaston left in free agency (the last guy to really outperform his rookie deal), Alan Branch and Karlos Dansby bolted when they became unrestricted. Levi Brown and Antrel Rolle were released.
Yes, you can say that it's been few and far between that Cardinal draft picks "clearly outperformed their deals", but that's as much of an indictment of the coaching staff and front office as anything else.
Its all about keeping your core players together. No matter how you go about it, (whether by use of the Franchise Tag to get into the money clearance period), or by having an obvious agreement prior to release like with Levi, (he wasn't going anywhere else despite offers from other clubs), or by early contract rework like Q, or DD. The important thing is that you keep your core players at home, make your team better, and develop new draft picks to augment the core. Once it becomes common knowledge that players want to stay here, it becomes more conducive to signing the right free agents into the mix. This team has far passed the point where no one wanted to come here, or home grown talent all wanted to leave. I give much credit to Michael B. and to Whiz for working together to make this happen.
Yup! but there's a third person in that team.
