Cards irritate fans with price increase

Kent Somers
The Arizona Republic
Apr. 15, 2005 12:00 AM • Cardinals hot sections

As a Cardinals season ticket holder since 1988, the team's first year in Arizona, Bob Jacobs has stuck with them through bad times, and, well, more bad times.

A letter and an invoice he received from the team last month may have changed all that.

It informed Jacobs that his two seats, in Section 3 in the lower level of the southwest corner of Sun Devil Stadium, were increasing from $30.40 a game per ticket to $46.80, a hike of 54 percent.

"I've been loyal," Jacobs said.

"This is unbelievable."

Michael Bidwill, the team's vice president and general counsel, said the club decided those seats were underpriced.

"In the NFL there are not a lot of sideline seats that you can get at $36," he said, referring to the previous price of some sections, which was increased to $46.80.

"It's an unfortunate part of the business that all sports have to look at."

Worse than raising the price, Jacobs said, is the way the team went about it. In a letter to ticket holders, Bidwill extolled the franchise's accomplishments in 2004, when they went 6-10. Near the bottom of the letter, he writes that the 2005 pricing structure will remain unchanged from the one established in 2004, "though you may note that some lower bowl corner and sideline sections have been reconfigured."

Those in sections that have been "reconfigured" are paying 54 percent more.

That word, "reconfigured," has irritated a few fans. To Jacobs, that means the seats have been physically moved. To the Cardinals, that word means a price hike.

"That's a lie, no matter how you slice it," said Jacobs, from Glendale.

John Medina of Scottsdale, who has two tickets in Section 3, called it disingenuous.

"To me, it's tantamount to going to a Chevrolet dealer and saying, 'I really like that car.' And the MSRP is $30,000," he said. "You go into buy it and they say it's now $40,000 and they are now calling it a Cadillac."

Bidwill admits his letter should have been clearer.

" 'Reconfigure' won't be a word that we'll use next year," he said.

What makes it worse, Jacobs said, is that the team took a home game away from fans by agreeing to play the San Francisco 49ers in Mexico City on Oct. 2. The Cardinals now have nine home games, including two preseason games, instead of 10.

Sixteen sections in the lower corners near the end zones were "reconfigured." The Cardinals declined to say how many fans were affected or how many season tickets they sold in 2004.

Most estimates have placed the season ticket number at less than 20,000.

Cardinals tickets traditionally are among the least expensive in the NFL. In 2004, their average price of $39.72 ranked 31st, ahead of only Buffalo, according to Team Marketing Report.

That's not much comfort to fans enduring a 54 percent hike.

Two factors combined for the higher price. Last year, the Cardinals offered to hold the line on prices for season ticket holders who met a renewal deadline. For all others, the prices increased. Most fans who renewed last year are now paying the higher price - an increase of between $3 and $10 per ticket in most sections.

Those in the 16 "reconfigured" sections, such as Section 3, are paying even more.

"My fear, and I know it's going to be realized, is this is just an incremental step for raising them even more when they move to Glendale," Medina said.

The team's new stadium in Glendale is expected to open in 2006, making this its final year in Sun Devil Stadium.

Medina does credit the Cardinals ticket office employees with being accommodating when he called to complain. Medina goes to games with family and friends. Together, they have 14 seats, and the Cardinals moved all of them one section over, toward midfield, for the same price.

Medina, who also has had season tickets since the team moved to Arizona, plans to renew because he thinks the players deserve the support.

"I go back to the Christian belief that you hate the sin and love the sinner," he said. "The football team is the sinner and we know who the sin is - the Bidwills."
..............................................................
Oh god, like we didn't know this was coming. What a freakin joke this paper sure loves to give this team heat for everything.

Bidwill admits his letter should have been clearer.

" 'Reconfigure' won't be a word that we'll use next year," he said.
:biglaugh:That did make me laugh though.

Yeah, I'm sure the Cardinals should be chastized for raising their ticket prices to somewhere near the league average. The increase is significant, and it's only going to get worse next year, but I'm willing to pay, especially if we start becoming winners. As soon as Denny rights this ship, the Republic will start becoming more positive. I'd like the cheaper prices, but people have to understand that revenue from ticket sales and such are still important, even in this era of revenue sharing.

Oh no, not $16 more dollars! I'm a student and have little income and a debt that is going to be with me for years. $16 freaking dollars is not a problem, even for me!

The language used by Somers was perfect though. Saying 54% instead of $16.40 makes it seem like a much bigger deal.

I think more or less it's the issue of season ticket holders...you assume a season ticket holder has 2 seats....thats an extra $300 to go to the game...

But like Redsz, I'm a student too, and I pay for three season tickets. It's expensive, but instead of having a $500 increase, I'd like to raise the cost incrementally before the first year in the new stadium.

We had to see

the increases coming. The thing that gets me is, even if they offer "packages" to the Mexico city game, what are they doing for the fans that have season tickets that can't go to Mexico? Anything? Did we get even a blurb for our loyalty? Oh well.

Speaking from a Jersey vantage point (where, incidently, several years ago, I gave up Giant season tix - there's a 20 year waiting list - because they doubled the ticket price and I could use the savings to get DirecTV to see every Cardinal game) - is this a legitimate cause for outrage in the Valley?

Or is it just the AZR looking to stir up trouble and disrupt fan focus on the draft?

Regardless of the money, the Cards need to improve team performance with the raise in ticket prices. New logos, uniforms, stadiums, etc. are a great move, but this team now has so much pressure to turn it around.

It's actually a nice position to see that as a fan.

But I do agree that the Cards would have been better off with a big increase going into Glendale stadium as opposed to an incremental increase this season. In the end, what do we get for the extra money? We will still pay the same higher amount next season.

We're all hardcore fans here and I would probably pay double what I am currently paying if I had to.

With that being said, I remember a survey call I got from the Cards about a year go about pricing in the new stadium. They alluded to the fact that my seats, which I was currently paying about $540 per seat, would be around $750 in the new stadium, which comes to about $100 a game.

While I will pay that amount, I am sure there are some ticket holders who may drop their tickets as the prices go up. On the flip side, the new stadium will attract new fans. In the end, there will be some churn or turnover -- old fans out and new fans in. You don't raise prices and 20,000+ season ticket holders just go along with you. Most won't care, but a few will.

Next year we get Air Conditioning and seatbacks and our own stadium with dedicated tailgate areas. Hopefully this season we get what we got last year - competitive football games. Just watching Dockett play last year was worth the price of admission.

Speaking of the new stadium it is really strange how both Cardinal Professional teams managed to be moving to new digs in 2006.

Ticket price comparison

Here is a breakdown of ticket pricing for all 3 major sports in the valley, i'm going to give team, highest price ticket (not including luxury boxes of any team), lowest price ticket, average ticket price:

Suns $550 $10 $84.83
Cardinals $235 $15 $41.59
Dbacks $116 $11 $39.69

When broken down the highest prices are obviously the Suns, Cardinals and Dbacks are about the same especially for average price of a ticket, although the very center seciton of the loge for the Cards are almost double that of the Dbacks.

The point of this is even after the ticket price hike they are still only about the same as the Dbacks and HALF the price of the Suns.

We as Cards fans have had it good as far as pricing but that has been offset of course by the average # of wins every year the Cards have gotten.

What some fans have to relize tho is part of the reason the Cards have struggled to win is because of the financial situation of the team. I mean figure the #'s out based on average ticket price:

$41.59 for 70000 seats times 10 games a year if season tickets = $29,113,000 in tickets sold

$41.59 for 35000 seats (our average attendance) times 10 games = $14, 551,500

Also take into account the additional revenue that the team will make in the new stadium if all the tickets are bought, plus now they are getting more money from the parking revenue's and the concession revenues, so figure the team will make an extra $15-$20 million per year in revenues (including the additional naming rights and signage). How much easier will it be to attract some free agents if we have a little more cash in the coffers for the incidentals?

So lets not look at this as a 46% increase in ticket prices, I say we look at it as in a 46% increase in the attempt to put a winning team on the field!

Come on, really, does anyone on this board complain about ticket prices? If you do, you should realize we are 31st in the NFL. Crybabies.

Wait wait wait....

I don't get it. I paid my tickets already this season before I left to come back to the UK.

Are prices going up next year or do I have more to pay???

You know, I originally thought that too, then I realized it did nothing for me. Your incremental payment this season is simply lost and you'll still pay the full "new stadium" ticket price next season in the new stadium.

Where it matters is perception for the Cardinals. It's easier to raise tickets 20% 2 years in a row than 40% in one year from a public perception point of view.

UGH! NOOOOOO no no nonono !!

Incremental is the way to go. When you just hike up prices people go ape-****.

People are going to complain about an increase in price no matter what it is for. Wether it is taxes, football tickets, gas, or in my case dog grooming prices.

I have had to sit there and be b$tched out about prices for dog grooming more times than I want to remember.

This is all part of every day business. This Jacobs guy is a ******( :D ) .
And the Republic sux, but that is common knowledge.
