What gives?

"League sources told Mortensen that Upshaw hopes to engineer a deal that would allow Owens to become an unrestricted free agent while providing draft-pick compensation to the San Francisco 49ers.

Under Upshaw's plan, the 49ers would get the 33rd overall pick of the April draft -- a pick that would be slotted between the first and second rounds."

A first round compensatory pick for San Fran over the TO fiasco? Lord I hope not. This stinks of favoratism in the worst way.

Sounds good as long as our original pick is considered a first rounder and T.O. is tendered at the highest level. Then we give the whiners our #33 and a third for T.O. I like that plan. As far as just giving them the 33? Screw TO and the whiners.

The problem is what about Northcutt? League office said yesterday that Owen's appeal had "no chance" It will beinteresting to see.

I don't see how it is fair to the other teams if the 49'ers get a pick between rounds. That would be flat out BS in my opinion.

This is the biggest steaming pile of horse @#$% I have ever read in my life. There is no way in Hell any team should allow this to happen. Every team picking in the second round is being cheated.

This is the stupidiest, most illogical, unfair, idiotic idea I have ever heard of. If I was Bidwill or any other owner I would be filing a law suit if this goes through.

This is sheer idiotic nonsense. No one in their right mind would agree to this ever...

The problem here is the 49ers KNEW in advance this was coming, Owens agent had been saying for weeks on March 2nd we'll opt out of the contract, the 49ers knew the real date was Feb 21, and didn't say anything. They've all but admitted this, so it's totally unfair now to reward them a draft pick for that, they should have to trade Owens. Same with Northcutt and Cleveland.

There's some argument by agents that the NFL was required to notify agents that the deadline was approaching, and less than 15% of them were notified. What I don't get is, only 2 guys, Owens and Northcutt, have supposedly been impacted, so that's 2 agents, so how can less than 15% of 2 be possible?

If we move back 1 or 2 picks because of this I'll be pretty ticked.

That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. You are going to reward a team because some agent didn't file paperwork on time?

If their contract that's signed says March 2nd. That that date should be honored unless they player signs something else. If the NFLPA's new contract changes the dates, then the NFLPA should go and update and get new contracts for the players affected and get them resigned by the players.

Since it's only affecting 2 players this year, what's was so hard to get owens and northcut to sign new contracts with the new date. Then there wouldn't have been any miscommunication.

Sounds like a large lawsuit in the making to me. Then NFL hasn't done so good in lawsuits lately and I would quickly honor the orginal dates. Otherwise, damages might apply and when his signing bonus could be $15M plus, the NFL could be on the hook for some huge money.

Now, about the draft pick, a 1st is way too much conpensation. SFO was already expecting him to opt out. Opting out of his contract as part of the opt out clause said that the team signing him had to give up a 3rd round pick.
