Cards Sign Veteran DT
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Tuesday, September 16, 2003

Tempe, Arizona - Defensive tackle Derrick Ransom, who
started 26 of 29 games the past two seasons for the
Kansas City Chiefs, has signed a free-agent contract
with the Arizona Cardinals.

Originally a sixth-round selection (181st overall) of
the Chiefs in the 1998 NFL Draft, the 6-3, 306-pounder
played in 56 games (26 starts) with Kansas City,
recording 122 tackles (60 solos), 4 quarterback sacks,
16 quarterback pressures, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble
recovery, and 2 pass deflections.

As a 16-game starter in 2001, Ransom posted career
bests with 76 tackles, 3 quarterback sacks, and 9
pressures. Last year, the former all-Conference USA
performer from the University of Cincinnati started 10
of 13 games for the Chiefs logging 42 tackles and a
forced fumble. He attended the Chiefs' training camp
this year before his August 31 release on the final
roster reduction.

To make room on the Arizona roster for Ransom, rookie
defensive back Jason Goss, claimed via waivers from
Chicago on Sept. 1, was waived. Goss was inactive for
the Cards' two games this year.

In addition, defensive end Alton Moore has been
released from the practice squad.

I would bet that they will sign Goss to the practice squad if he clears waivers.

Sounds like Cards hope to get Goss on PS by cutting Alton Moore.

Yes. And my guess is another move is coming, with a practice squad position open. Either Tim Duncan or Simjanowski are going to be brought back to pressure Gramatica or Player.

I hope you're right. Let's see the front office and coaching staff start holding some guys accountable here!

That's right. I remembered his name and that Cardinals were very interested in him but he signed with the Chiefs instead.

You may be right but I would seriously doubt that a team would put any kind of kicker on the practice squad. It would be a waste of a spot and here is why I think so.

If someone has a kicker down, they are going out to sign someone to replace the injured guy. If a kicker is on someone's practice squad, any team can sign him as long as they go to the active roster. There is really no benefit to having a kicker on a practice squad.

Has there ever been a kicker on an NFL practice squad? Duncan was back here in December, but he was on the active roster and inactive for the final one or two games last year so the Cardinals would have his rights going into this season.
