Signing Smith would be another mistake. Do not use the money at RB. WR & Defense is where the money needs to go.

mattyboy why dont you get a clue....

2mil a year is freaking rediculous when there is NO OTHER COMPETITION for him. No one even wants the guy why the hell are we offering 2 mil a year!!! If he signs here that is wasted cap space PERIOD!!! No one in their right mind would pay him that and gaurantee him the starting job. Emitt Smith is NOT worth that maybe 10 years ago when he was young but not NOW. Cards are insane for even putting out that offer.

Last year the Cards strategy was to run the ball and control the clock. This year the same strategy is in place. The Cards picked up a battering ram for a FB and have shored up the depth on the O-line. They also acquired a QB who can throw a long ball that doesn't resemble a dying duck, actually quite the opposite. They have several WR's who are very fast.

Now with all of these moves to set up a smash mouth running team that can utilize play action and stretch D's with their speed at WR they are going to count on 6th rd pick Scoobey who was on IR all last year (no playing experience) and undrafted Anderson (25? carries all year) as the back ups. I think a better plan would be to add a RB who has proven himself in the NFL. Emmitt may not be playing like an All Pro at this point but at least we do know he can still tote the rock. Leadership and a winning attitude also can't be over looked.

It would be a shame to have gone to all of the trouble to set up the running game for success and have unproven depth at RB.

Cardiac, you said it better than I've read anywhere to date.
The Cards need his character and his leadership more than anything. It also won't hurt in the PR department.

Offensive linemen will be held accountable with Emmitt Smith in the line-up. You think Emmitt will put up with missed assignments and half-assed effort. No sir! Emmitt instantly gives the Cards o-linemen a reason to come to play.

No more offensive line-men thinking to themselves, "Oh we suck because our quarterback can't throw a ball to save his life, or our running back can't get through the hole quick enough. Oh well, I just do what I can because were the Cardinals and that's all anybody will expect of us."

Emmitt will tell it like it is to those in the huddle who are sucking. To a man, he'll look them in the eye, and say, "Make a friggin' hole!"

I don't think that is too much to pay Emmitt. As much as I have reservations about him coming, if he wants to be here, then fine. I don't see the bad that can come with it. We'll have two quality running backs to share the load of what should be a really big running game. Shipp would take a beating week in and week out, and Emmitt could lessen that. I think it would work out well.

Shane H....

I will say that it isn't "smiley face" funny how you run to every thread and trash Emmitt Smith. In fact, it borderlines on NEMish tactics to get your point across. Yeah, we get it...you don't want Emmitt here. If you get any further insight beyond that...please let us know.

Maybe that is the clue that Mattyboy wants to give you?

So you say we offer the minimum, say "Well, noone else wants you so you have to sign with us", and then all will be happy? 2 million doesn't seem that bad for him. Although I will say I don't agree with someone having a guranteed starting job unless they have earned it.

2 million a year for the NFL's All Time leading rusher is a good deal for both sides. Emmitt gets to pursue the 20K rushing mark and the Cards finally get instant credibility around the NFL. Maybe the Cards will finally sell out some home games this year and have a 12th man advantage. I flew out from NJ last year to their home opener vs Chargers and what a joke it was to only have about 30,000 fans (out of 72,000) for a 1-1 NFL team in their home opener. For no other reason alone we need Emmitt to stop that embarrassment.

Go Cards/ America!

<p>You are exactly right Cardiac. With Emmitt and Shipp, the Cardinals could have one of the best running games in the NFL. Running behind that big Oline and Hodgins, they will be able to use ball control, keep their offense on the field and their defense on the bench. The other team can't score if they don't have the ball.

I tend to agree. I wouldn't compare Shane to NEM but for god's sake, we get the damn point already, you don't like Emmitt.

The team is clearly going to sign him if they can, so I suggest just dealing with it.

Emmitt brings fans

I think E. Smith brings the Cardinals serviceable depth at running back, leadership and accountability to a young team who needs it, and most of all the possibility of a bigger gate. How many people think that E. Smith brings at least 5-10k extra fans? I for one surely do and that easily pays for his contract.

Emmitt DEMANDS to get the staring job and 20-30 carries a game. Thats dumb on our part if we agree to that. Marcell proved he can be an effective back behind a mediocre line so we sign him long term. If we now give the starting job to an old man in front of him whats that say to Marcell you think he will still have a good attitude. You think Emmitt wont be a cancer like he was in Dallas the last couple of years when he did not get HIS CARRIES he cried and bitched and seperated the lockeroom. Yeah lets bring that kind of leadership into the lockeroom. F*** emitt he is not one of the greatest backs ever he has just played to long not to mention the bulk of his all-time yards came behind the one of the biggest and best O-lines ever. Wonder what barry or jim brown would have after all those years behind that line. We have plenty of depth at RB and that 2 mill could go towards an area of NEED like f**king DEFENSE or maybe a WR or TWO. I dont think the strong part of Blakes game is handing off dammit!

Does anyone else think of the St Louis game and WINNING it with the running game next year?

I realize that Reggie White was playing at a higher level than Emmitt is when he went to GB, but the PR was part of what got other FA's to sign with the Packers. I think Emmitt would give the Cards a push in that direction and anyone with a brain can see it's needed (can you say Colvin? Holliday?).

I would give Smith two million in a bag of cash today. He might put 5-10,000 more in the seats which would in itself give the team a lift. I think the guy can still run. He is 34 not 44. What are the alternatives?
