I don't think that $2 mil is too much to pay for Emmitt Smith. I think that, as long as you're not promising more than, say, 20 "touches" a game (which is what the Falcons promised Warrick Dunn when he signed with them last year), I'm fine with it. The Vet minimum for someone with Emmitt's experience is somewhere in the ballpark of $800,000.00, right? I'll overpay $1.2 mil to get a quality starter in place, who may not gain 1000 yards, but I think we could work something like the Hearst/Barlow thing that they run in San Fran. Barlow is older than Marcel, so I think that they might (and this is a really big "might") be able to split time and still each gain 1000 yards this season. That depends on the offense doing one simple thing: sticking with the game plan.
Let's let facts be facts here, in respect to free agency: No starters, wideouts or linemen, want to come here. We can get plenty of "depth" out here with our wallets, but we're not getting Holliday, Okeafor seems to have been overvalued by most of the people on this board, and the best WR left on the market (as evidenced by the Jets' search for a new starter) is Curtis-Freakin'-Conway. We're going to have to finish building through this years draft and maybe patch a couple holes with June 1 cuts, but this team seems to be mostly done for now.
One more thing, to be clear: Even with the depth chart looking like "1) E. Smith, 2) M. Shipp, 3) T. Jones," the Cards will not have one of the best running games in the NFL (per 40yearfan). They'll be an all right running team, with good depth, and not much dropoff between spots 1, 2, 3, but our running attack will be in the middle third of the league.
