I just laid this out in another thread.

While it does save us money THIS year, it makes the probably of cutting him in 12 months even more painful.

Before this adjustment to his contract he was looking at a 13 million cap figure in 2013. A 9 mil salary (up from 1 mil this year), the 2 mil signing bonus, and a 2 mil roster bonus.

Basically they doubled down on his remaining roster bonus, which makes releasing him in 12 months trigger an absurd 10 million+ cap hit just to tell him to buzz off.

So, now with this change he is looking at a cap figure probably around 15 million. I will give it the Shane "Manning Guarantee" that Kevin Kolb will not make that cap figure seem remotely acceptable.

I hope they use this extra money very wisely this season, because barring a miracle its going to really plug us in the corn-hole in 12 months.

Does this put Kolb on even thinner ice this year if he does not prove to be what management previously thought. Afterall, his cap hit this year has been reduced for this year if he is cut.

The only thing that will put Kolb on thinner or thicker ice is how he plays comparable to other guys in his pay grade and from within the context of who else is out there we could bring in or draft.

In this respect, he's no different than Skelton or for that matter any other NFL quarterback.

About an ago hour...

Kent Somers ‏ @kentsomers Confirmed again today that Kevin Kolb's contract was not restructured.

EDIT - Doesn't mean they won't.

Good. I would rather they restructure Fitz, who has a gigantic roster bonus, and convert some of that into future guarantees. It would cost Fitz nothing, potentially free up a lot of cap space and doesnt have the high potential to bite us in the butt like giving Kolb more guarantees does.

Except the Cards won't do that. To think the team is going to make any drastic changes this offseason is just wishful thinking. Front Office and the Coaching staff are happy with what they have and that's what we're going to see on the field in September. A 7-2 finish with a kick azz defense? Can't blame them.

Well, if the reports are true about the Cards having less than 1 mil cap space left then they will have to adjust something just to sign their draft picks.

I agree, Fitz makes more sense.

Isn't the cap supposed to make a huge jump when the TV contract goes into effect? Isn't that supposed to happen next year?

Precisely. In addiition to Fitz there are other possibilities; Wilson's is at $6.5M (all salary) and this could, at least partially, be turned into a bonus.

I thought the rookie cap was separate and distinct from the veteran cap.

hmm... I couldnt say for sure. As far as I knew the "rookie cap" only refereed to the amount of money guys make in their draft slots, not that they were cap immune.

I thought that each team got X amount of dollars to allocate to their draft picks depending on where they drafted.

But then I don't know if that counts as part of their total cap or not.

It all counts towards the cap. But since 3rd through 7th rounders make so little money they are usually not even in the top 51 salaries that count towards the cap so fitting the rookie cap in your cap space at the time isn't all that hard to do. Don't have to worry about the full 53 players(and the PS players by the way) until the final cut down day.
