Championship!!!!
The Arizona Cardinals departed Flagstaff for Phoenix after having a short walk-thru Friday morning at Northern Arizona University. The team will depart Phoenix mid-afternoon for Minnesota to take on the Vikings on Saturday night.
Head Coach Dennis Green said that the starting unit will likely play the entire first quarter. The second unit will play the second quarter and part of the third. The third string units will play some of the third quarter and the fourth quarter.
Cornerback Duane Starks and defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch will see their first game action since suffering season-ending knee injuries during preseason of last year.
Wide receiver Jason McAddley spent most of last season on injured reserve with a torn hamstring. In the middle of a receiving corps battle to make the roster, McAddley is looking forward to the chance to show the coaching staff what he can do.
“It has been a long time coming for me,” stated the third year receiver. “I’m excited to get back on the field and get in the thick of things. I want to make some plays and an actual game intensity is just a lot different from practice, so I’m just ready to get back out there and enjoy some of that excitement.”
It will also be the first time Cardinals fans get to see the speed and explosion that defensive end Bertrand Berry brings to the defensive line. After two weeks of going up against the Cardinals offensive line, Berry says he’s ready to line up against the Vikings.
“It is always good to have competition against other guys because this kind of gets old,” said Berry. “When you’ve been going against the same guys twice a day for almost two weeks, you are ready for a fresh opponent. I’m looking forward to competing against another team and seeing how we measure up.”
Everyone will also be interested in seeing how rookie center Alex Stepanovich handles his first live NFL game action.
“It’s exciting,” shared Stepanovich. “It will be a limited basis but it will be good to get in there and get accustomed to game action and game speed because that is different then practice speed. Naturally, I’m a little nervous, but I am sure I’ll get over it after the first snap.”
Given the expected crowd noise at the Metrodome, Stepanovich and quarterback Josh McCown will be able to get in some good practice for the season opener against the St. Louis Rams.
“I think just with it being my first game and getting used to playing with crowd noise and hearing the count will be good for me,” stated Stepanovich.
Rookie quarterback John Navarre played at the Metrodome twice during his collegiate career at Michigan. Although he knows what to expect in terms of noise, he’s looking forward to finally playing in his first NFL game.
“It is going to be exciting,” said Navarre. “I am definitely ready for it and excited for it. I am familiar with the setting at least, but I’m just anxious to get in there and do my best.”
The game will air on AZ-TV (Channel 27, Cable 13)at 5:00pm MST on Saturday.
